Not Just Bike enrages me cause holy shit, car dependent cities suck. The fact we can build walkable cities and we choose not too is enraging.

When he mentioned Kitchener's new transit hub and showed that empty lot, what was funny to me is that I owned a condo in a building visible in this video, kitty corner to that lot.
The old Tannery, which Google shared with a few other tech companies, was where my office was. That was a bigger deal at the time. CBC was calling it the Silicon Valley of the North.
Back then I had two pieces of information. One, a highrise of condos was being built across the street from my office. Two, the downtown transit hub was going to be decommissioned, along with that ancient train station. Supposedly they'd even add a second set of tracks between KW and Toronto to finally allow more than 2 trains a day (they left at 6am and 6:30am).
Google was going to build a huge campus, and between the condo building and the campus, where the Ion stop was being built, they'd have a new train and bus station to serve the downtown core. So I spent what little I had, borrowed what I could, and bought a tiny condo in that building, knowing that when it all came together it would skyrocket in value. And if I ever lost my job I could always commute to Toronto. Right?
Fast forward 4 or 5 years. The condo is done. The Google campus is well under way. But the Kitchener transit hub is just gone (it was a homeless shelter for a while there), and they haven't even broken ground on the new transit hub that was supposed to make the value of everything skyrocket. Something about an issue with the contractors.
A few years later, as happens a lot in the tech space, I became a layoff statistic. Now I was stuck with a condo I couldn't afford to keep. I had to sell it early (goodbye first time home buyer benefits). After paying off all the debts I made a tiny profit, but nowhere near as much as I would have made if I'd hung in there a few more years, according to the real estate guy. The transit hub would be done real quick, he said.
That was a decade ago. It's been over 10 years since the transit hub was supposed to be finished. It was supposed to be done before they closed down the existing one. So hearing Jason talk about it like it's something that's happening soon was hilarious.
It has the heavy gates at crossings because CN owns the rail corridor between Uptown Waterloo & Northfield drive and runs freight trains late at night. Since it is not a dedicated line, is has the have standard gates.
Everyone hated it until it was done and it was a hard sell to many people that can't imagine living without having a car. Also they decided to replace the water pipes and sewers at the same time as installing the LRT line on some major roads and fucked the city up for 3 years passing people off.
Only 3 years? Lucky
