The Amish and Sabbath observing Jewish people get religion-based exemptions from needing to use technology, it's not unprecedented

As a fellow Butlerian, I salute him.

Someone should forward this to Proton employees.

And BAM, just like that, the term “Butlerian Humanist” was born.

Man granted first-of-its-kind religious exemption against mandatory AI use at work — Humanist argues that offloading his thinking to LLMs violates his beliefs, Title VII accommodation protects employee

Hmmm, I've got evidence of transhumanism going back decades. I wonder if I could argue that being forced to use poor quality weak LLMs is offensive to my people.

It's like a car dealership having a Jesus Second Coming sale every Sunday.

I like the idea that using inferior AI is opposed. Another Transhumanist argument that seems totally fair to me, is that the goal of the current AI technology is to create sentient life by creating convincing enough interactions to make them indistigushiable from human interactions. This makes the most likely scenario one in which we create a living thinking being on par of humans but create systems of intentional slavery around them.

We aren't there yet for me, but should enslaving a person really be a matter of taste?

Religious exemption should apply to common sense. That's just common sense.

[–] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Common Sense is just code for "cultural zeitgeist", there's no such thing as common sense

Cool. So the first defense we have against AI is coming from the "shit we made up long ago" corner

Basically the opposite. The guy is a Humanist. Humanism is basically the opposite of established religion like you're thinking. They focus on the belief that humans are ultimately responsible for their own autonomy and progress and that our morals and ethics can be defined from the fact we are social beings who ultimately must rely on each other. Humanism tends to emphasize science and human agency.

I'd argue that humanism is a bit different from, say, Christianity. It has ancient philisophilcal roots, but it's not like humanists are following texts from some crazy asshole tripping balls in a desert 2000 years ago.

I would simply flat out refuse that shit. If that wouldn't fly, I would quit.
