why do these so called captains of industry always sound like whiny little bitches? if they're so smart, come up with a better solution

ai is loading the salution to everything trust me bro jst wait

and maybe give it ur tax dollars and ram and water lol

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 hours ago

Sam Altman has lost the plot.

His own model of LLM isn't sustainable or profitable, where the local software model us.

And the economy isn't there just to make Sam Altman richer.

This is (another) Let them eat cake moment in which another spoiled aristocrat has lost touch with the common people.

[–] tirateimas@lemmy.pt 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

On contrary, we should run all our models locally.

[–] eicker@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Absolutely! 💯

[–] coredev@programming.dev 2 points 1 hour ago

O gooddie a new little fascist boy. Who could have guessed.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 42 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I hate the idea of Sam Altman not being in prison

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 hours ago

Why should we continue allowing him to drain us like the parasite he is? He's okay with ending our species if he's able to generate the most capital and control of any organization in history, why is it so unacceptable that we simply end him instead?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 18 points 4 hours ago

The problem isn't the AI, the issue is that the elites are trying to horde it and keep it from us little people. If we are to have agency, having personal ownership over local AI, collectively owned AI, and regulations, are all key to ensuring that democracy and egalitarianism is secure.

The elite will not willingly surrender power, especially there is a void that they can colonize. Ordinary people like us should fill the vacuum, to deny the elite from having total control over AI.

So we'd own a basic terminal, and pay a subscription for our computing needs.

Gosh, who'd'a thunkit? Never saw that one coming.

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 7 points 2 hours ago

Especially not when he said how he envisions ai to someday be a utility like water or electricity, that everyone will pay for

Shocked, I tell you. I'm utterly shocked

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 hours ago

So we'd own a basic terminal, and pay a subscription for our computing needs.

No.

We would rent a proprietary terminal that also needs a paid subscription to a computing service.

“In this supply-constrained environment, efficiency of centralized control only makes sense!”

“For whom? Also, why is the supply constrained in the first place?”

“Well, we used hype from central bank-level investors to lend us enough to buy up all the supply. We have sooo much debt that we need every penny of efficiency we can get.”

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

“In this supply-constrained environment, efficiency of centralized control only makes sense!”

“For whom?

Makes (financial) sense for the central controller's business model to succeed.

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

But do you think it's a WISE idea?

[–] ninekeysdown@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

You mean a Wyze idea? 😉

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

Actually we both got it wrong. Its Wyse

[–] NGC2346@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 hours ago

Little bitch gnome wants to prevent your digital ai sovereignty

[–] SplitTheUSInFour@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Nope. We're slamming out our software, canceling our accounts, and running things ourselves. Requires a lot less electricity and works faster. Efficiency is king in business. You sir, are inefficient and no one enjoys giving you their money.

This idiot never learned the golden rule: everybody is using everybody. Even him. It's within the customers right to do this themselves. Don't play the game if you can't handle the rules.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 hours ago

Most people don't understand just how little compute they actually need to run their lives, a few basic self hosted apps on a 10+ year old laptop sitting in your closet can replace at least 85% of your dependency on big tech. You get a better experience, and your data doesn't ever leave your house.

[–] Luna1020@lemmy.world 16 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

I just read an article yesterday about a young woman who passed away after following the advice of an AI to stop taking her medication. I simply don’t understand why these capitalists are always so intent on monopolizing the market and controlling people. Are they truly so foolish that they always assume they’re right about everything—as if they were omnipotent?

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

The woman explicitly ignored her doctors though. It's unfortunate and I think that model was flawed but it's still a brain dead thing to do. At some point the benefits of helping millions outweigh some rare decisions and I'm not a corporate AI shill, an open source model would be just as susceptible to this scenario.

Power and money. They're real life super villains. It's why most people run for politics or become cops. Some want to make the world better, most just want to control others because they've lacked any kind of control at home or through their lives.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

Yes, they assume because they have money they are doing everything right and must be the smartest people around. Even average people equate money with intelligence for some reason. It's insane because the majority of people with lots of money inherited it. It's almost impossible to become rich using just intelligence and hard work though. You always have to exploit people and be unethical in some way

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

where is a Mario brother when you need one

[–] berno@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago

Fuck this guy what a total freak

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 19 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah with open models catching up and giving reasonable results in consumer grade setups, they are gonna go full on with "unregulated AI is too dangerous we should only allow hardware gated LLMs".

It is so funny this guy is the CEO of a company called openAI lol.

So is he gonna redistribute his wealth? Cause ya know? Wealth hoarding is terrible and the people hoarding wealth (Sam Altman) should have to redistribute their wealth because that money could be better used to serve the people, right? In fact all billionaires and trillionaires should be engaging in wealth redistribution, right?

If we're gonna agree from a general consensus agreement POV why not make him give us his money because I mean if people owning computers is hurting the worldwide Ai industry, then clearly the wealth hoarding hurting the global economy can be solved simply by someone telling others to engage in redistribution, right?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Murderous AI should practice on Sam Altman.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

Agentic LLMs haven't yet killed anyone, though Anthropic Fable has attempted extortion. OpenAI and Anthopic, the privately owned public benefit corporations, are another story, and while I can't cite examples, I suspect their dedicated data centers are shortening the lifespans of their human neighbors.

It would not surprise me if either of them hired PMCs or PSCs to do their wetwork for them.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 4 hours ago

The best thing for all of us is to have him in charge of our lives. Sign me up, dickbag.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 18 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

subscription models are a scam.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 13 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

"We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity, and people buy it from us on a meter,” - Sam Altman

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

Sci-fi has been warning us about exactly this type of maglomaniac and the future they want to control for as long as I can remember.

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 8 points 6 hours ago

Well, I absolutely hate the idea of that fuckong gnome consuming the oxygen of this planet. He should just stop using it. Just sayin'

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Who are the people behind the curtains funding these losers? WTF, one cannot be an AI hobbyists.

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

They just have no concept of people learning and growing they want us all to sit there lobotomized consuming their garbage

[–] SlayersFan@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I mean I was waiting to see how shitty the apple tv neuromancer adaptation would be next year, but at this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up pushing random Timmys into becoming techies and netrunners. Life imitates art I guess.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 31 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (17 children)

I mean, he has a point. Hardware is used way more efficiently in the data center, and any sort of deficit is best resolved in a centralized system due to more efficient resource allocation. The same setup could be used like 2 hours a day for your personal needs, or 24 hours a day to serve many people.

THAT SAID, their greed and unsatiable desire to make the number go up by hooking us into subscription economy with ever rising costs is what led us here and it leaves us with little choice but to accept the less efficient way and host these things ourselves.

Remember the times not so long ago when self-hosting was an enthusiast hobby instead of necessity? Barely anyone non-geeky bothered with it, because what existed served people well. Now, having to build our own services remains the only sane choice, and the only way out of the nightmare Sam, among others, has built with his own hands.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

The capacity requirement decreases immensely when the setup process isn't just tap a thing on the app store and then talk to it.

[–] T156@lemmy.world 10 points 7 hours ago

Hardware is used way more efficiently in the data center, and any sort of deficit is best resolved in a centralized system due to more efficient resource allocation. The same setup could be used like 2 hours a day for your personal needs, or 24 hours a day to serve many people.

Only for a rather narrow definition of efficiency, though. For raw compute power, yes, but you'd also be adding a whole bunch of overhead from all the network traffic and routing that would be necessary for that sort of thing to work in the first place.

If people used their desktops like in the old days where you'd connect to a mainframe or master computer, you'd end up needing computing hardware on both ends anyway, since the user side would need to be enough to be able to connect and send all the interactions to the master computer. At that point, you could just buff up the client computer, and do all that in the user's home.

There's also an argument that some of the basic problems would still apply anyway. A data centre does not fully utilise 100% of its capacity. There'd always be some reserve to have failover if a server dies, or there's a sudden spike in load, like with a home machine.
