The US State Department approved the potential sale of 500 Patriot air defense interceptor missiles to Ukraine on Friday, according to a department release.

Kyiv uses the defensive weapons to blunt Russia’s continuous ballistic missile strikes on its territory, but Ukraine’s supply ran dry earlier this month, CNN previously reported. The deal is for the PAC-3 MSE variant of the Patriot — the most advanced version currently in service — that is one of the few weapons capable of shooting down incoming ballistic missiles.

Notably, the purchase is not subsidized or financed by the US, according to the release. Instead, Ukraine is covering the estimated $2.1 billion purchase with funds from Canada, Germany and Norway in addition to a loan from the European Union, the State Department said.

So I guess the reason they didn't allow European countries to transfer Patriot missiles they had in stock to Ukraine was that they wanted Ukraine to buy some more directly? They wanted to double dip. Disgusting.

The whole Patriot missiles being purchased directly form the US is because they cannot allow others to provide them far cheaper. Its not about protection, it is the middle taking their cut.

The quicker we can reduce dependency on the US the better.

I mean, clearly at some point in the last week a bribe(s) of some kind has happened.

Deliverable "in a few years".

[–] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Ah yes, the usual MAGA rigid definitions in action.

Not really ethical for the US to be making so much money from Europe for this. Did Trump and putin plan this and they're just killing Ukrainians so Trump can get rich?

💯. Oligarchs see ordinary people as "things" like a pen, a door, a cup

Literally this.

Welcome to the whole point of NATO from the US' perspective since Reagan. Y'all are customers for the American Military Industrial Complex and NATO is a purchasing contract to their eyes. The sales contracts are literally what is considered as critical to national security to the US. Military dependency as a security policy is real, publicly documented, completely legal conspiracy.

Europe may have been fooled for 40 years, but better later than never.

The Russian diesel was just a profit sharing deal.

Then Europe should develop a new, sovereign ballistic missile defense system. Until then, they have no option but to buy whatever is available now.

Russia attacking Ukraine is definitely more of a European issue than a US one. And if the NATO countries had just spent 4% of their GDP on defense as agreed they wouldn’t need to be complaining now.

Or if you just let Ikraine into NATO or the EU.

Basically this is a war of gross European neglect and complaining about anyone other than yourself is candidly offensive.

Chill Vance. I don't need to hear you being a manipulative liar, thanks though.

Sure it would be better if America was doing more to support Ukraine. But I think it's good news that they are at least allowing Ukraine to have these Patriots, since they are important for Ukraine.

I'm not trying to give too much credit to the US of course. Trump's administration is terrible. I'm just saying it could have been worse, if the US refused to allow Ukraine to have any Patriots.

[–] chleb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It will be too late. Russia uses this weakness very well and consistently attacking.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do they even have the stock?

[–] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

We cannot allow this kind of clear thinking here.

[–] chleb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Until they deliver to Ukraine, there will be destruction or surrender in Ukraine

Looks like MAGAts won't be getting their $5,000 check after all. Who could've guessed.

[–] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

They were never getting that cheque.
