Reddit needs to move to a “containment experience” where users, once logged in, are no longer allowed anywhere else on the internet.

The modern Renaissance is going to be the revival of early-2000's web forums.

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

The only thing Reddit has over them is a collapsible tree-based comment structure. Fix that in the old forums, and of course fucking ditch PHP, and we're all good.

[–] Midnight_Pearl@hexbear.net 51 points 3 days ago (2 children)

get ready for new wave of insufferable lemmy.world types i guess

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It will be fun watching them hate the new people and not being able to differentiate them

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 37 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Lemmy world welcomes new waves of insufferable swine, and one month later the swine demand the entire admin and mod team either resign or they split from the website to make a new lemmy that isn't ran by lemmy.world tankie extremists

[–] AppetiteOfExcess@hexbear.net 25 points 3 days ago

Then they'll defederate .world preemptively, as a last resort.

[–] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 24 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Not without effort. When there was a big jump in Lemmy users in the past, it was due to recruiting efforts by @dessalines@lemmy.ml, commenting on Reddit posts about Reddit closing down their free API. Historically, instances reddit-logo users are directed towards get a huge influx of new users, that's why lemmy.world has the most users by far.

top lemmy servers according to fedidb

(side note: why does FediDB not list hexbear.net, lemmy.ml, or lemmygrad.ml?)

cap-think Logically it must be because its run by a seething anti-communist liberal I assume. That liberal's name is pixelfed.

Let's check their moderation policy: https://fedidb.com/platform/moderation

Servers that exist mainly to host or spread the kinds of content below are removed from the directory and from every total on the site. Decisions are informed by community reports, documented violations and the health of the network as a whole. Banned servers contribute nothing to the statistics.

And it lists a bunch of things but I know what it had to have been, the 21st century faithful liberal anti-free speech exception they love deploying:

Misinformation

Servers dedicated mainly to spreading:

  • Deliberate misinformation campaigns
  • Harmful medical misinformation
  • Election interference content
  • Conspiracy theories that target vulnerable communities
  • Content that undermines civic processes

I would guess they classify all of us as in violation of all but the medical misinfo. And who decides what's misinfo? Why the liberal institutions like the CIA and EU (CIA in a Euro flag). There's something hilarious about banning the flagship instance run by the developers of this particular federation software but it was always inevitable that liberals would close ranks and do all they could to marginalize and silence communists even on their own software.

[–] aspensmonster@lemmygrad.ml 24 points 3 days ago

That liberal’s name is pixelfed.

Pixelfed, Loops, and FediDB are all projects of the liberal known as Daniel "dansup" Supernault.

[–] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 25 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Without that liberalism, lemmy.ml is #2, hexbear.net is #4, and lemmygrad.ml is #9

IIRC we were top by posts/comments for years

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We were top by all metrics until basically this year. That's why a lot of these guys scrub us from the metrics. They can't stand that the most active lemmy community is a bunch of trans commies.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah it wasn't going to hold forever, reddit.world is almost 7x larger than hexbear. It was going to overtake comments eventually.

The problem of .world being so bloated is going to be a serious problem in a few years if other lefty communities don't defederate. After a certain point it stops being a way to draw in new users and becomes a drag on the community. The dialectic is in motion. 😔

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago

You still have more human created posts Im pretty sure half of the Lemmy world posts are repost bots

Whoa. From what I can tell, the fedidb source code doesn't include its included or removed instances.

Critical support to reddit in their continued efforts to kill reddit.

Deleted my account a couple of years ago and have been using the 3rd-party frontends to keep up with the few subreddits I cared about, but even those are either dying out or turning into toxic crap. It feels like visiting a youtube comments section without the video.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 39 points 3 days ago

Critical support to the Reddit admins in their war against Redditeurs.

I haven't exactly "read" 1984, but I'm pretty sure it mentioned mandatory penis inspections to use reddit.

Every public website is moving to log-in only experience because of ai scrapers, which make it super trivial to scrap websites for data. These dumb ai bots are also super inefficient and just soak up all your bandwidth and cpu. IP blocks don't really work for long, so if you require logged in users only, then you can block via user at least to try to frustrate ai and make it more expensive.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Wouldn't it be trivial to generate accounts as needed?

[–] makotech222@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago (3 children)

depends. for reddit, i dunno what they do, i imagine they have some email verification or something. Maybe also sms verify. On hexbear, we require written applications to be approved.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The written application to join gave me "serious tankie group" vibes, when I signed up. Kinda neat. A little much for a social media account, but if it keeps the libs and bots out, I guess it's necessary and better than some approaches.

You have to apply to join hexbear now??

I feel wicked underground for bypassing the application process. I was here before we were super-exclusive.

“Pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition. We are excited and moving quickly,” the CEO added, noting Reddit’s intent to become a “direct daily habit for every Internet user.”

:stallman-shining: Every proprietary program seeks to imprison its users, there is no exception.

Also this seems to also be another boon to chatbots who now can just spit out reddit forums to you exclusively.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 34 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah this is annoyingly going to become a reason to use an LLM. Hey DeepSeek find me all the reddit threads on this topic and summarize them for me because I can't see them without logging in.

I hate what the Internet has become

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 34 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Reddit already ahead of this and licensing reddit comments for slaughter. Can't wait for what pizzadickfingers48 thinks about socialism! Or what the definitely not 1000s of actual smurf chatbot accounts think about their favorite anime.

I hate what the Internet has become

The Internet accomplished what it set out to do, make the US the undisputed ideological hegemon of the world. I hope it all breaks down in fire.

[–] Red_Eclipse@hexbear.net 40 points 3 days ago (2 children)

First they made old reddit log-in only. I tried logging in but they locked me out because of my VPN. So I've been lurking on the shittier UI. Now they're gonna force log ins on that too? I won't be able to use it!

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 43 points 3 days ago

Now when I search for something and the only results are on reddit-logo I’m like “guess I’ll never know” sans-shrug

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'll miss it as a good way to talk about TV shows I like. We need to bring back old forums.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

There's a couple Lemmy instances just for that but they are sparsely populated. That's the one thing reddit did right was getting all the users in one place

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 47 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This explains why it seems like they've been actively fighting Redlib lately. Every loophole forks have been trying was patched less than 24 hours later, to the point that the only way to use it is a fork that takes a real session cookie, which feels like it somewhat eliminates the point.

[–] Korkki@lemmy.ml 27 points 3 days ago

We must remember that Reddit was basically worthless company before the AI boom. It's only true value it had was a largeish userbase, that was also easy to shill and vote manipulate. When started to rise they started scraping the shit out of reddit for free. Then reddit put the walls around the garden and a toll booth at the gate. That is what made them profitable They don't much care about the actual userbase, i guess they rely on the fact that too many people are too invested in their communities to leave and will keep generating them free training data forever. rn scraping without paying is seen as the bigger threat to their business model.

I find it difficult to believe that daily active unique users rose 12% YoY if they're also forecasting that their total DAUs will drop by a small double digit percent in Q4 this year.

Related to people dropping the site, I don't understand how anyone can use the new reddit interface, it sucks so much ass it's amazing. Whose genius idea was it to make default sort include posts from months or even years ago?

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 30 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I dunno dude, that site has been actively trying to harm itself for a decade. They have backed into success and they keep trying to figure out ways to tank the money printer and nothing works. Every shitty UI update is almost carefully crafted to kill its userbase, people are just slop goblins I guess.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

Fuck that's me I'm a slop goblin

It also doesn't help that reddit killed a bunch of smaller/niche forums/websites since people just migrated to whatever subreddit popped up

is this just them admitting to it publicly? because this feels like it's been the case for a few years, at least. i rarely even look at it anymore. the api/3rd party app shut off was pretty much it for me, so i nuked my account and overwrote my posts with garbage text. i noticed how incessantly it kept trying to force a login. also, it's been very militant about connecting through VPN ips.

reddit is gonna be for tech-incurious, covid-denying genXers the way facebook steadily became the social media parking lot for lead poisoned boomers.

i'll miss the sopranos sub, which i still check a few times a year for a laugh. anyone else realize Phil Leotardo did 20 years in the can? Commendatori!
