After reading this news story that half of Americans are skipping meals because of affordability and a bad economy, I have to ask how are you all doing out there?

I heard from a real estate agent friend of mine that REOs, i.e. bank foreclosures on home mortgages, are going up like crazy, which is a sign of bad times, like the recession of 2007-08.

I have heard from others about rents not being paid, lack of jobs, etc.

Every day, there’s more news of corporate layoffs, moreso than usual.

I live in the economic bubble of the SF Bay Area, where tech wealth more-or-less insulates me and mine from the most serious consequences of a bad economy, but how are things elsewhere?

For me, I'm in rural US. I have a well-paying job (6-figures) in a low cost-of-living area and live fairly close to work.

Personally, I'm doing alright, but my particular situation is insulated from everyone else like you. That being said, while I have a short commute for work my main hobby involves driving 1+ hours one way up to 3 days per week. Gas prices being so high is a big (though not the only) reason I've cut down on the driving for hobbies.

Trying to think of what hobby could have you driving so much. I guess it's safer to cut back than find more victims closer to home.

Murdering vagrants. It's more of an addiction, really...

What the fuck are you implying here?

[–] ComradeMiao@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why did you not just say what your hobby is that includes driving so far away? Lol

Because I already have a bad habit of rambling and figured writing an entire paragraph to explain was neither needed nor wanted. I cut out half of my original comment, and the original draft didn't add anything about hobbies.

That doesn't justify insinuating that someone's a rapist, murderer, or whatever other angle theyre suggesting.

Also, I didn't ask you, I asked the user making the accusation.

Scandinavia. Not too bad. I live in a town heavily in the mining sector. Our very local economy follows the global metal prices.

In the US? Wasn't that pedophile suppose to make it "great again" ? Hmm...

[–] KaRunChiy@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

US, central, it's okay out here. I have to travel to 3 different towns for work and gas just hit $5 a gallon, so the margins are getting slimmer. There's jobs available but you gotta know people, and they don't pay great. Food security isn't a huge issue as I live near many farms, it feels like 2022 but instead of any ups, it's only going down

[–] Fjdybank@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Jobs are scarce across 3 different towns, and you gotta know people

I'm sorry I hear your pain but just, how are you also considering this "it's okay out here"??

That sounds like a failed economy !!

I have a friend who lives in South Carolina and they have it BAD. Nobody is hiring, most of the listings are fake, stupid ai personality tests that randomly reject you. They've been out of work for months as not even 'beginner' positions are open.

Too many data centers.
