Hard to believe isn’t it!

Musk is charging Ukraine $2500 per month per Starlink terminal, for over 250,000 terminals. Musk is making bank for shitty service (it's not fast enough for gaming) and then he cuts services for partisan purposes, costing Ukrainian lives.

The upsell maneuver reminds me of when Verizon tried to do the same thing to California wildfire response services when communications cut out during disaster control efforts. That didn't play well, either.

it’s not fast enough for gaming

Dawg, you need like a 5 megabit connection for online gaming, if even that. Starlink offers multiple times that at the minimum.

I can understand it being too slow for many things, but gaming is one of the worst examples you could've possibly given.

Couldn't find a reliable source for the 250,000 figure. The closest thing I could find was 50,000 in 2025.

I hate this as much as you do, but come on, don't make shit up.

The co-founder of the Ukraine Defense Fund, which has helped secure Starlink access for the Ukrainian military, told The Atlantic that he estimates there are now over 250,000 Starlink terminals in use across the war zone.

I found the article in The Atlantic (Paywall bypass here):

[Musk's] company has earned hundreds of millions of dollars from the Starlink terminals operating in the war zone. Liscovich estimates there are well over 250,000 of them. In the past, SpaceX, which runs Starlink, has reportedly charged the Ukrainian government $2,500 per terminal each month, and it has cut off service when bills go unpaid. Earlier this month, when U.S. military officials asked SpaceX about the outages in Ukraine, the company advised switching to an upgraded contract to restore Ukraine’s access, U.S. officials told us. (Musk and SpaceX did not respond to questions for this article.)

As for incapacity for gaming of Starlink, that's anecdotal, having heard it is a problem from fellow gamers here in the States that depend on Starlink. There's enough of a lag to disallow for common action games, although this is a known issue consistent with all satellite internet services. Hence the need for rural ISP buildout blocked by the big communications oligopolies (and presently the well-bribed Trump administration)

You're remarkably antagonistic for a Lemming. Are you sure you're not a Musk-shill or a bot?

[–] ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, but I bet those ping times are just awful. And that can definitely interfere with gaming.

[–] iglou@programming.dev 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I thought so too, then I googled it. It's actually not a bad latency at all. Better than some cabled connections I've used in the past.

Might not be very stable though.

[–] ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Hmm, that's somewhat surprising. And agreed on stability being sus.

In the end, though, even if it was a perfect connection, I would never know cause fuck that guy. With a 2x4 with rusty nails in it. Obviously.

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 3 points 7 hours ago

Bandwidth doesn't matter for gaming - latency does. You could have a 100Gbps connection, but if it has a latency of 1000ms then it's useless for gaming.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 16 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

is that not a sensible and highly ethical strategy for opposing a war?

[–] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 15 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The fact that a country under attack needs to pay for these kind of things is already insane by itself.

I just still cannot believe that happened and just...no one cares.

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 24 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm being pedantic, but there are those of who obviously care that this fuck nugget did this.

Nobody who matters cares.

We don't matter :/

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

I thought the same as I typed my comment...

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

Naah. People cared for about a day. Then, their distractions took over.

Goddamn this guy can't go one minute without being a complete piece of shit, his death will brighten my day

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (2 children)

His death with be celebrated all over the world. I imagine it will be second only to Trump's at this point.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 11 points 10 hours ago

It will be a toss up between him and Putin and Netanyahu.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

I'd still like to see his ass deported though

"Would you like to upgrade to our non-annihilation plan?"

Teslas in a few years:

"We notice that you're in an uncontrolled spin; uncontrolled spins violate Tesla's terms and conditions; your airbags have been deactivated. Upgrade now to the super spender safety plan for a one off payment of $30k to unlock instant airbag activation".

That extortion has an end date, hopefully 2030, when the EU's Iris2 gets operational. Until then however Elon can play his nasty game, at least for the higher quality level of the service.

So…. Xfinity?

[–] WappleFF27@feddit.online 13 points 11 hours ago

Hope the EU can get their own network up fast, because Elon is Ukraine's enemy, he will always cut off service when they need it most.

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 12 hours ago

I know this one, you call up spectrum and you get a year trial.

The dispute isn't that they're not allowed to use Starlink for murder drones, it's that the murder drone plan is more expensive.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 11 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

SpaceX is not actually supposed to even have direct control over Starshield. It uses Starlink infrastructure, but is a military application that is supposed to be under the control of the federal government.

SpaceX shouldn't have the option to pitch different plans.

[–] Mika@piefed.ca 18 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

You do realize that reactive jet shahed interceptors are also using starlink and also hit the speed limit wall?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago

What does that matter? How fast can a children’s hospital be moving?

Apparently the TOS muskrat claimed were violated by Ukraine using starlink for ''offensive'' purposes, were really just TOS for the lower paid service level.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The president cut service though. Musk does what he is told with prez, his entire fortune is based on government contracts, he would never defy prez, he was clearly asked to take the blame for this, and OP here is misguided to repeat that lie without moderation.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Putin may have delivered a "that's a nice satellite system, it woukd be a shame if something happened to it" message.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 2 points 8 hours ago

More like, those are some interesting tapes and evidence of you mr us president fucking children. Be a shame if they got released along with the pictures of your tiny dick, and all that.

Besides, satelite wars are a dangerous game, both the US and russia have them in place in orbit, and both have been making suspicious maneuvers I read. China probably too but idk what they are up to. But once it starts, it will cover the orbit in debris that will make satelite launches much more dicey as even a speck of dust at the speeds involved can break one of these satelites.

[–] Zen_Shinobi@lemmy.world 17 points 14 hours ago

The guy that nazi saluted on live broadcast twice did this? Not shocked at all seeing the attrocities the nazis and communists did to the Ukrainian people.

Either someone buy out Starlink, Space X, and Tesla or create a better company would be great in the current timeline.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 22 points 15 hours ago (4 children)

Yes, because Musk needs more money.

[–] tirateimas@lemmy.pt 2 points 11 hours ago

If true, these guys are really disgusting. We will see the day when he falls.

It's like running with a bucket of water to a burning man and saying "I'll douse you, but it'll cost you 100 bucks"
