We can still read it on the Wayback Machine, but yeah it's not the same if you want to write or read something new.

I'm always amazed at the notion of writing your stuff online, directly on AO3? Why would you do that? I honestly can't see any advantages, but a whole list of reasons why it's a bad idea.

The advantage is getting kudos for something you wrote ages ago and seeing your creative expression impact others who share your passions :) lots of folks dont get that much IRL

Oh I read Lumidaub's question as writing directly into AO3's editor. Not posting in general. Like why not write into say open office then copy paste into AO3? But that's how all the fanfic writers I knew did it. Only a few wrote directly into the websites text boxes.

You read correctly :)

My sincere apologies for misunderstanding! 🙇

Goodness, I absolutely understand why you'd post your stuff on AO3, I do that too. But there are much better ways to do the actual writing process, even just Windows Editor.

What’s the deal with the hate for Wattpad?

You'd have to dig deeper, but I've heard that they've banned multiple types of content. I'll let you know if I find out something about it.

Ads, bad search function (I tried a few times and found nothing related to what I was looking for), afaik no adult content.

restoration will take around two weeks, but could take up to a month

That's a long time.

I'd rather they be thorough, and I expect their technical resources are a bit constrained. (Plus, I'm pretty sure the user-facing site is or was built in Ruby, and I have no idea what security best practices are for that.)

Realistically it can't take this long if the person working on it has knowledge required, it might be just a generous estimate or they are going for full backup restoration from some kind of very slow cold storage.

If we were talking about people for whom this was their job, I would agree that they were being way slow, but we're talking about a group of volunteers who're cramming this into their free time along with all their other obligations. In that situation, it sometimes takes as long as it takes.

I'm not saying that they aren't working hard, might be some other circumstances are preventing them from re-deploying/fixing it, in my experience with infrastructure work cutting single task into smaller chunks staggered over time actually makes it harder.

Again there are probably other factors there and it's not simple 're-deploy older version' kind of task.

If it was a data breach, they may be doing forensics to see if the backups are also infected.
