Ah, finally I can share mine that i learned a while ago.

Using hand soap , you know these soap bars when washing hands.

Put water on one hand, grab the soap bar with the DRY HAND and rub the var against the wet hand. Then put down the soap bar hand rub hands and wash like ordinary.

The bar will not be soggy, crack or look nasty or leave a puddle of half dilluted soap, instead it will stay in really good shape and almost no soap will be wasted on the puddle below it. And the soap will jist last for ages this way and still be effective.

Maybe we just forgot this way and that is why the liquid soap has taken over, in my house we have one toilet where guests usually uses and there the hand soap bar gets ruined really quickly so we replaced it with a liquid soap dispenser...but it always surpises me how often it needs to be refilled.

Earlier this year I found out you're supposed to run the sink water until it's hot, then start your dishwasher. Also sprinkle in some powder detergent inside the door, especially if there is a tray for PreWash detergent.

You watched the video, didn't you

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A video, I don't know if it's the video.

I haven't watched any videos about dishwashers ever since I don't own one but I'm 100% sure we're talking about Technology Connections.

I haven't watched it but if TC recommends it I'm onboard.

The mad lad. He's an international treasure. He has that CGP Grey about him that makes him one of my Hall of Fame educators/YouTubers. Can watch ANYTHING he makes for days.

Have relationships. Turns out I can’t do it all all by myself and if someone isn’t willing to or able to work with me it’s not a viable relationship

Not too long ago I learned that you're not supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing your teeth, but instead just spit out the toothpaste. Apparently you're supposed to leave a coating of it on your teeth for it to work properly.

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 61 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (10 children)

Where did you learn this? I've never heard this recommendation before and it sounds pretty out there.

Edit: it turns out that apparently both the American Dental Association and the National Health Service of the UK recommend not rinsing immediately after brushing. Huh, TIL.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 42 points 4 days ago (4 children)

The flouride in toothpaste doesn't work if you rinse it off immediately. You should not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing.

Get a mouthwash with floride in it. Floss to get everything out, rinse, brush to clean everything, rinse, take a drink of water cause you won't have any for a bit, mouthwash to polish everything up, don't eat or drink for as long as possible (like right before bed so it stays clean)

As a kid I learned from the dentist that you should massage your gums with the toothbrush. I've recently learned that you should absolutely not and this is why I have retracted gums and exposed roots that hurt like a motherfucker.

Childhood dentist that is probably long dead, I wish you bad thoughts wherever you are.

Not recent, but I spent the majority of my teenage years dealing with awfully frizzy and unmanageable hair because I was shampooing daily (also using an excessive amount). I was under the impression that you need to thoroughly shampoo all oils away every time you shower in order to be "clean." When I moved to university and no longer had parents around to tell me that I stink, my hygiene standards became more... relaxed, but I was surprised that my hair was a lot healthier!

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

it varies from person to person. I have very oily skin and hair.

about 30 minutes after a shower where I use an oil stripping soap my skin looks like I rubbed Vaseline all over it.

I have to routinely soak/bleach my sheets/pillows to remove all the oil.

at this point I'm surprised the US army hasn't invaded my ass.

Same issue here. Turns out when you strip all the oil off your skin/scalp, your body puts a lot of work into re-oiling it up. Now I've got to a point where I only need to wash my hair a couple times per week. It took a while to get there, with some days when I would have greasy-looking hair, but the longer you can push back the next wash, the better.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

sounds like you need a conditioner, certain shampoos do dry out the hair more.

I don't know about "wrong", but I recently found out people think it's weird that I attempt all the across clues in a crossword in order, and then all the down clues? Evidently most people jump around and make use of the extra letters they've been getting?

It never even occurred to me to not just do all the clues in order. 😬

For years I kept dating and being in relationships and putting a lot of effort into it. Also socializing and making friends too.

I gave up about 5 years ago and I'm much much happier with my life. It's amazing how much better I feel on a daily basis when my energy and efforts aren't going into a black hole from which no joy comes out. I also rapidly achieved a lot of life goals after 10+ years of achieving almost none of them.

Being mostly totally alone is completely awesome and I'm annoyed that other people convinced me it was terrible and awful.

[–] earlier_riser@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (14 children)

I'm actually moving in the opposite direction. I was (still am really) a massive introvert, then I got really, really, really sick and realized I have zero support if something happens where I can't take care of myself. I realized at the end of the day humans are a social species and we need some level of human connection to thrive.

Not actually recent, but a while back I learned that what we call the "bottom" of the banana is actually the top, flowering end. Turns out it's way easier to open a banana at the flowering/non-stem end. So many years I'd been opening them at the other end, trying to snap off the stem part, mushing up that end of the banana most of the time.

I learned that soap is a salt and that acids like vinegar break it down and kind of rerelease the fatty acid that made it up.

It was very gross.

Walking in general. Physical therapy both sucks super hard and is vastly improving my life. I've had a decades long back injury caused by a dog attack, but I've apparently been walking in a way that guards a wound not entirely there.

Thank you PT.

FUCK you PT.

Opening cereal/fruit/granola bars and similar foil wrappers. I would tear them on the serrated part and then only a sliver of the wrapper would come off and I'd have to try to widen the resulting hole in order to extract the bar, often crumbling part of it in the process. However, quite by accident I discovered that if I instead ignore the serration and tear against that foldy seam part that runs down the entire bar, then it separates right down the middle like magic and I can easily remove the bar. Often works on 8/16oz cheese too.

I traveled with some Thai monks who would tear the whole side off bags of chips turning them into a bowl to share.

I started looking up basic stuff after I saw a video of that guy who would shit in his hand in the bathroom and thought that was normal.

Turns out I was brushing my teeth backwards, you're supposed to use mouthwash, then floss, then brush, and don't spit.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (6 children)

you're supposed to use mouthwash, then floss, then brush, and don't spit.

every dentist I have ever gone to in 50 years it's always been; brush, floss, wash. always spit.

even people I have dated brushed like this.

not saying you're wrong...but you might want to verify your sources.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 4 points 3 days ago

That's crazy, I do floss, brush, then mouthwash. It just makes more sense to me : flossing is mechanically speaking the "rawest" operation, as in it frees interdental space from big chunks which allows the brush to get in there and remove leftovers, and then mouthwash applies a protective film over it all. But maybe it's all a movie I'm directing in my head

[–] Kanzar@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

Mouthwash not necessary. Statistically flossing first then brushing has cleaner teeth, but functionally dental professionals just want you to be flossing at all so we won't judge you for flossing after. Spit and leave residual fluoride toothpaste on teeth.

Every reply to this is about brushing teeth but I'm more interested in "that guy who would shit in his hand in the bathroom and thought that was normal"

What the fuck?!?

You shouldn't be using antiseptic mouthwash all the time

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I read it was too make a sterile environment for the micro abrasions from flossing and brushing but idk I'm not a mouth scientist.

Swallowing pills. A friend pointed out that tilting your head down helps with swallowing and I had never thought about it before. It really does make it easier!

Cleaning cast iron. I used to add water cold and bring to a boil. Now I heat first until grease is almost smoking, then add a bit of water and let it steam and sputter itself clean.
