World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I was a programmer for 25 years. I always figured I could have made a contribution to AI research, but the opportunity never came up (I was too busy writing Skype clones for cable companies and ISPs that were never used by anyone). I regretted this for a long time, but not any more. I never imagined AI would be this fucking bad, "bad" in the sense of bad for humanity and just plain bad as a product.
It's cause it's not AI
FWIW I always felt my contribution would have been towards "real" AI rather than the current pseudo-AI stuff that is all the rage. In addition to being a programmer, I also have a background in evolutionary biology and neuroanatomy. The "neural networks" that are part of current AI were originally based on the understanding of how neurons function that existed in the 1970s, and they were (and are still) a poor implementation of that level of knowledge. IMHO true AI can be achieved by more accurate simulation of how real neurons and real neural networks function and how they have come about in the real world through hundreds of millions of years of evolution by natural selection.
That being said, "real" AI is probably going to be even worse for humanity than this current stuff is, so at least I'm glad that blood won't be on my hands.
I feel for you. Going into machine learning was my dream to. Until this. I wanted to work on true artificial intelligence based on the human brain.
Please stop using this argument. Unless you also brought it up every single time the term was used in videogames etc
It's a bad argument that relies on pure language semantics that helps no one and undermines any good argument against it because it weakens your stance
I do bring it up every case and even if I didn't this case it's an important distinction. Artificial intelligence is a marketing term used to conjure images of Jarvis and what not in people heads.
Video games companies never claimed to have near sentiment AGI baked into their games that would replace all human workers or blow up the world.
The term artificial intelligence is used to anthropomorphize LLMs as weird as that seems.
It is an important distinction. These are large language models, not reasoning models, not AGI, not artificial life not artificial intelligence.
I know that term as been used by the machine learning community in the past to mean things like decision trees and general models, and it didn't really matter much then but it matters A LOT now.
Words have meanings. This isn't arguing semantics, it's using words as they are intended so we can communicate effectively about something in the world. To argue otherwise is naive, dishonest, and quite honestly just annoying.
Hi I'm new to this debate and I agree with you that language matters and all that stuff you said at the end. That being said, I'm firmly in the camp of "LLMs are bad, but a 'true' AI would be even worse for us". I could type up several paragraphs diving into the several reasons why I think that way, but to save time (and to get back to my job) I'm just going to steal this Frank Herbert quote:
Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them
Do I think AI, in a vacuum, is always bad and will be no matter who or what makes it? No, not necessarily. But whatever we build will be inherently, and intrinsically tied to the micro- and macro-systems of our society, which are all DEEPLY fucked. Consequently, any AI we bring in would also, even if not initially, end up as being equally, deeply, fucked and end up being far, FAR more detrimental than positive
Yeah true AI would be quite insane. Especially if it was behind human capabilities.
There's just no way to ensure it's aligned towards good. We can't even define that ourselves. Who knows the suffering we could unleash on ourselves.
It's a problem with human greed, not AI. If we didn't have greedy oligarch parasites then AI wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem. NIMBYism is destroying the future of the USA.
Not so sure, the younger generations have zero critical thinking skills, can’t problem solve without a road map. Need to be able to figure shit out on your own creating your own road map
Why this generation more than the one before?
Maybe it's because the system is working as the old ghouls pushed it.
It's always fascinating that the blame is put on the individuals while mega corps are distilling hijacking our brains and gaming our systems to get more money and control.
Society at large is built up for people to succumb to the pitfalls, but still individuals get blamed when the pressure is simply too much or when the system is made to make individuals fail.
Fuck this noise. We would have been the same as this generation if we had the same monetized dopamine hooks as they grew up with.
I won’t deny that, we’d be the same. Doesn’t matter though, they have to do better and grow out of it or future generations are fucked. We can put blame on the mega corps but that’s just a rocketing chair, gives you something to do but doesn’t get you anywhere
Nah. Humans are just complete shits in general.
It isn't AI (although, again, that doesn't even exist, all we have are statistic machines) that is the problem. Its that we are not anywhere near enlightened enough to be responsible for anything as a species.
We’ve extincted plenty of other species. Eventually we’d start on ourselves.
You don't use it, you lose it. And many people are already bankrupt in the old brain department as is....
i wonder how he ended up on "might"?
You'll find in general that smart people very rarely speak in absolutes on things such as this. Because the more you know about something the more you realize how much you don't know.
You've got to have a little wiggle room. Just in case.
I 'might' not eat a tub of ice cream later on and then sit on the toilet crying until my legs go numb, buuuuuut...
Maybe if we keep the AI but loss the Oligarchy...
We would still have to deal with the skill atrophy of AI use.
Even if AI is entirely green, publicly owned and widely accessible, it will negatively affect us.
Did calculators or abacuses do the same thing? This argument has no merit.
Tools allow you to do you work better and be able to focus on doing other parts better. It’s not like people can’t do basic math, yet people want to say AI means we will go back to banging rocks? Yeah that makes sense…
Scroll the comments, we've had this exact argument.
People literally do struggle with basic maths also
