Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente offered his resignation on Tuesday in the wake of one of Europe's worst rail disasters in recent memory last week that killed 69 people.

The tragedy, Spain's second fatal rail collision in less than a year, has intensified scrutiny of railway safety and added political pressure on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ahead of parliamentary elections on November 29.

In January, a train crash in the southern Andalusia region killed 46 people.

as an American that emigrated to Spain, it's still so odd to me to see any form of accountability in government

@mattyroses@lemmy.librarysocialism.social as a Spaniard I can tell you that this is not usual in Spain either, you can see how the former expresident of Valencia, Carlos Mazon, still maintains his seat in the congress there after a series of serious negligence in managing emergencies during the torrential rains two years ago (DANA) where more than two hundred people died because alerts and rescue teams were not adequately managed.

And like that example I can give you many more, "coincidentally" most of them from politicians from the main right-wing party, the PP.
