Musk has no interpersonal skills. He made the art of the conning obvious rather than being able to distract from it. They realized letting him into their inner circle was a huge mistake, but that he has a fragile incel ego... so they kept looking for a way to let him go gently, hoping he won't realize that even Republicans think he's a loser. I've got to admit that if they find a way to do it will actually help Trump, but I think the damage has already been done.
