Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

Saw this on Mastodon and had a laugh. Not sure if it's real, but it's funny.

I read bastard instead of badass. But the energy matched.

The clear blue sky backdrop leads to mild confusion

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 27 minutes ago

I like the Suomi.

Pretty sure they had that sign some year outside Slush, the venture capital event that's coming up soon again.

What makes it kinky? Names and addresses please!

[–] albbi@piefed.ca 14 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

It's hilarious to me that venetian snares made an entire album about Winnipeg "Winnipeg is a frozen shithole"

[–] umbraroze@piefed.social 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I think this is real. Was originally made several years ago.

Helsinki isn't so bad in November, actually. I'm in Oulu, wayyy further up north. Starting to get into the oof territory. I would probably feel stronger about this if I was not mildly drunk.

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 0 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Yes but are you also mildly nude?

[–] umbraroze@piefed.social 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

As far as my arms go, yes.

The definition of kalsarikännit means being drunk on the couch with your underpants on. I have my underpants. And jeans. And t-shirt. 'Cause winter is coming. And...

Fff sshh

OK not bad yet, but it reminds me I need to finally get Frostpunk off my Steam backlog this winter, been too long. ...What were we talking about? [falls face first on the phone with nose on the submit button]

[–] jaycifer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Frostpunk in the winter is great. I first played it in North Dakota during the 2019 polar vortex when the windchill got down to -50 degrees freedom units (-45 Celsius) with my new game-syncing lights. As the in-game temp got colder and ice crackled across the screen, the lights would brighten white to match and I became more and more aware of the cold creeping into my room through the house’s insulation. It was super immersive. I hope you get the chance to play it this winter!

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That's super cool! I've never played it. How long does it take to complete?

[–] jaycifer@lemmy.world 1 points 34 minutes ago

I think it depends on your experience with city builders and resource management games. Having played games like Tropico 4 and some Sim City 3000 I managed to get through the main story on my first try in one 5~8 hour sitting. My friend who is less experienced lost entirely after ~2 hours and stopped there. It’s pretty tough until you know the mechanics, but that’s also part of what makes it so rewarding to survive.

I have never seen snow in person before, having my first winter in Finland sounds cool. I'd love to do that.

I’m in Germany and was teaching a class as a group in the course of a teaching degree (basically, every class period a different pairing from our German language pedagogy class would team up and teach the same students in a subsidized German lesson), and my partner for the early morning December class was from Vietnam, experiencing her first winter. She was an hour late because she was completely unprepared for icy sidewalks and literally couldn’t walk to class.

She finally got there after she made makeshift crampons out of crumpled tinfoil, which was both clever and very cute. Nobody held it against her, but all found it a little funny (she did, too).

Edit: basically, you just need the right gear and it’ll be fine, but you might feel differently about it from how you expect to. Some people love it, but most people from warm places don’t.

[–] buran@lemmy.today 3 points 1 hour ago

Even if you don't love it, I think it's something nice to experience.

Thank you for the comment, pretty informative and engaging!

Is November even the worst time to visit Finland? I’d assume January or February

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 74 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

January and February have snow and cold and sometimes sun.

November is just wet, dark and miserable.

[–] oce@jlai.lu 8 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Sounds similar to anything from Paris and above in Western Europe, just maybe a few less degrees.

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

The dark is the difference. Sunrise was at 8.00 today and sunset was at 15.45.

Basically if you work 8-16 you don’t see the sun until springtime… 🫠

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

It depends. You can get -20°C in November too. But yeah, mostly it's just miserable and far more so than in central Europe.

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 25 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Pretty sure your laugh was real 😉

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

I thought the Finns made fun of others for being overly complimentary/glazing?

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 7 points 6 hours ago

When I visited Europe before moving here we came in December/January. Far northern Sweden, Latvia, Estonia. We experienced a variety of overcast, cold, wet, snow, ice, loved every minute of it. Where I'm living now reaches -30c sometimes lower. Makes me happy :3

Well, Helsinki (HEL is the airport) is very popular in October for some reason

[–] umbraroze@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Finnair used to do a spooky themed flight AY 666 from Amsterdam straight to HEL every Friday the 13th.

Nowadays they just have a regular flight from SIN to HEL.

[–] CarstenBoll@feddit.dk 4 points 3 hours ago

I've been on 666 to HEL from Copenhagen before flying to China ✈️😊 no theme though!

[–] Ertain@feddit.online 1 points 4 hours ago

At least the Finnish have a sense of humor.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 5 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Been to Helsinki in November and in April. November was magical

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 10 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

By "magic" do you mean someone made the sun disappear?

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Almost found myself in a bar fight with Germans, played tabletop games with locals, and was offered drugs on the street. You know, Finnish magic.

[–] Bipauler@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

What's the popular finnish drugs to offer tourists?

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 hour ago

7 years ago, pre-covid, it was flakka (gravel, alpha-pvp)

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

No, he means he really liked the glöggi.

[–] trd@feddit.nu 1 points 6 hours ago

Yeah I traveld south down there in November once, I brought sunblock...

[–] PragmaticOne@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I went there once for some work and it was -16c. I was glad I’d bought the right coat and gloves. :)

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 hours ago

Tickets were cheaper.
