Been using syncthing for a year now and works great for syncing between devices. But i miss file sharing with family members that nextcloud allowed me to do. Yet i left ut because it was too bloated and every update at the time broke my instalkation. Is there something a mature and specialised as syncthing but that allows sharing between accounts?

what's "family members", are those folks on your LAN? or people on mobile devices or from elsewhere?

if it's the former, samba shares are easy. the latter, any number of solutions listed here, provided you pay extra, extra attention to firewalls and other mitigations, it's hell out there wrt automated bots hammering exposed endpoints.

People on my LAN. Samba shares on mobiles too?

samba shares are windows shares, on linux. any os, mobile and desktop, can either access them directly or got a light-weight client for doing so.

you set up one or multiple shares on your server, like one is "family" and other is "steve" and you can define what each user can do to them - just browse, or read, or write to, etc

or if you need just a read-only share, any web server (apache, nginx, etc) can allow access to a folder you shared.

There is also Pingvin Share X, a fork of the original Pingvin Share. It allows you to create file share links, even with an expiration set, either by duration or count of link opened.

I haven't used it but I heard a lot of good things about copyparty.

Also, I don't want to be that guy, but were you running Nextcloud in a container or bare metal? Nextcloud pissed me off too, but now I'm running NextcloudPi in an LXC and have had no issues so far.

+1 for copyparty, it (pretty much) just works, though the web interface if you want people to be able to upload things to your server can be a bit finnicky for the less techy of your family members.

Make a syncthing directory for each person you want to share with. For only a few people it's really simple. I do this with a few different things. Each "share" can be setup with individuals or groups as you need.

Yes, but when you try to share that folder with different users on the same device it gets complicated ... each user needs its own instance and it feels messy and unecessatily complicated for the end user.

On the same device? You don't need anything. Just share that folder in the os. It

... I know I am missing something here.

I use sftpgo for file sharing with others

OpenCloud might be an option. I plan to give it a try sometime soon, but I haven’t yet, so I have no other useful info about it other than it exists and it’s for file sharing & collaboration.

Looks like someone has forked nextcloud and created another huge beast. But looks interesting.

[–] tofu@lemmy.nocturnal.garden 2 points 10 hours ago

Similar, Nextcloud is a fork of OwnCloud, and OpenCloud is a fork of the new OwnCloud Infinite Scale.
