Tl;DW? Don't care for Linus much.

3rd party docks for the most part being incompatible with Switch 2 isn't news but they explain why. They show using a USB analyzer dongle what the communication between the Switch 2 console and its dock is and what happens with generic docks. An interesting view imo.

oh, so just stuff I already knew lol. i was looking into 3rd party docks for S2 and found there are basically none aside from a shotty aliexpress one. Yeah not a fan of the change.

Was confused because he's holding a switch 1 in the thumbnail

well, it's not a news reel. That my compact dock isn't working is something I know since June but I never saw the output of such an analyzer dongle, so I found it interesting nonetheless.

I didn't even realize that (loads no thumbnail on my Lemmy instance), I use DeArrow on YouTube, and while watching the video I did not look at the controllers. Apparently the joycon have a custom skin. There's a comment on YouTube from someone also confused.

And did they get any interesting results from the analyzer?

What about it? Video seemed ok to me

More of the drama that happen with him. Likely.

LTT like most of the tech channels these days are just sponsored content intended to sell you stuff with occasional clickbait or ragebait spruced in between. Which is a shame because back in the day it was like Top Gear of nerdy tech. Their quality has been in decline for years which for me culminated with what they did to Billet Labs. This video didn’t bring anything new to the table but is designed to bring views because Nintendo hate is trending. Yes, capitalism is bad and we all exist in a capitalistic society, news at 11.

In my eyes the quality went up a lot after that wake up call made them overhaul their production process, but it's a shame it took one. For the Billat Labs testing on the wrong card, the private emails did eventually come out showing Billet Labs agreed to doing it that way and then lied about it, so I's hard to sympthasize.

Fair enough, I found the USB protocol analysis interesting, haven't seen that before.

To me it looks like more of the same, which has always been okay on the surface. Billet Labs fuckup was about more than keeping their sample, it was about negligent approach that amounted to measurable harm to their business. I doubt LTT can fix this long term because their core business is selling ad space for gadget makers and they are still in the race to the bottom, just with better economies of scale.

Unless somebody (you?) posted another video showing the output of such an USB analyzer here, it does bring something new to the table. It's definitively 1000% more insightful than your "LTT, ewww" comment.

I meant this Nintendo video, not USB one.

This Nintendo video is about the USB issue. So you troll without even watching what it's all about...

I assumed (in good faith) that there was some (other) original and useful video from LTT about some USB technicalities you guys were referring to :)

I’ll have to stand by my original take that this video is just a rehash of research done by other people.

[–] bobby@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 months ago

So annoying that I can't use my compact dock when bringing the console to friends.

So the video is essentially saying that Nintendo requiring docks be their proprietary basic one and not supporting third-party docks with more features could be a sign of companies like Apple, Samsung, and others making their USB/Thunderbolt ports proprietary?

Doubt it.

Nintendo is in kind of its own little tech bubble. It's not really considered tech, it's considered a toy, so while the Switch OS may have started as an Android fork (I'm not sure how true this was at release — prior to the Switch launch it was reported that they were forking Android), it's not an Android device and should never be (and fortunately isn't) treated like one. And yes, it uses a USB port, but it's not an open USB port, it's a Nintendo accessory port and should be treated as such.

I don't like the idea of Nintendo using proprietary crap, but it's Nintendo, if you want to pay $450 for a minor update to the Switch 1, you kinda know what you're getting. If you love the Switch and have had it since release, maybe that's worth it. I just got the Switch 1 OLED 11 months ago, so the Switch 2 doesn't appeal to me. Maybe if they had it when I was ready to buy one, I would have bought it instead, but a minor spec bump less than a year out? Hard pass. Especially with like two games (DK:B and MKW). I play Animal Crossing, and Switch 2 isn't doing shit for us. (Interestingly, AC New Horizons is designed to scale up to whatever hardware you run it on. PC/Mac users have gotten it up to 8K without any real work. So on a Switch 2 it'll just take advantage of the higher resolution/frame rate without needing a patch. Even so, my AC runs fine on my Switch. I do get a little pop in on my island if I watch the edges sometimes, but it's no big deal (and Isabelle is still telling me my island needs more shit on it to get that coveted AF 5 star rating.))

Switch 2 is a massive upgrade over the original. There are business practices to criticize (key cards, no OLED screen, paid cloud saves, this dock) but to claim that it's just a minor upgrade is to say it bluntly quite ignorant. Other recent handhelds could take a hint regarding power consumption and weight.

Yeah. Apple, Google, etc. are gatekeppers according to the EU, Nintendo currently isn't. So they can do it without pushback, others can't.

the Switch OS may have started as an Android fork (I’m not sure how true this was at release — prior to the Switch launch it was reported that they were forking Android)

What? That has never been true. The Switch OS is a continuation of the 3DS OS which is why Yuzu is a fork of Citra. Switch uses a few Android libraries here and there and also some FreeBSD code in the kernel.

Seems you confuse Nintendo with Huawei and their HarmonyOS which used to be an Android fork.

I just got the Switch 1 OLED 11 months ago

So you're telling yourself that the Switch 2 is a minor update because it makes you feel better...
