I feel like saying it's normal for empires to fall due to external causes is not accurate? It's usually the exception. Maybe the external factor is the final kick, knocking over a rotting house of cards, but the cause is almost always division, internal conflict, or unsustainable growth. An empire is much more likely to collapse under its own weight than it is to have Alexander the Great kick its teeth in. The Ottoman Empire was called "The Sick Man of Europe" for a reason.
Progressive Politics
Welcome to Progressive Politics! A place for news updates and political discussion from a left perspective. Conservatives and centrists are welcome just try and keep it civil :)
(Sidebar still a work in progress post recommendations if you have them such as reading lists)
LOL empire. They haven't lasted for even a century. It will be a footnote in history.
The US..?
yes
But it's been around for more than two centuries?
As a country. Britain, Spain, Portugal have been around for much longer as a country. That period is not as long as they have existed in the capacity or form of being an 'empire'.
Damn and they say American education is bad.
Well then, enlighten me and tell me exactly from when to when you consider them an empire?
Probably from the moment of our emancipation from England. Occupied more territory than most European states ever had at that moment.
If you want to be pedantic about it how about when we occupied the width of an entire contenant? September 9th 1850
We didn't spring fully formed from Zeus's forehead to fund the destruction of the Reich.
from the moment of our emancipation from England.
I was asking from what year, decade even to what year. This is as vague as it gets. If I wanted to be pedantic I would ask what a "contenant" is. That date you mention is about California? I think you don't get what being an empire means. It's not having a really big country.
So you are unaware of the goings on in the year 1776?
How about you define empire? I'm sure Leopold II left lots of decorative plaques for you to learn about it on.
So you are unaware of the goings on in the year 1776?
What? Do you think becoming independent makes you an empire? Jeez, I would say stay in school and learn some fundamentals, but then again you're in the US. This is pointless
Jeez I asked for a definition of empire. I'm sure that a resident of the most horrific colonial power in all history knows what it means. So tell me.
Edit: lol it just struck me how funny it is for a Belgian to say the USA's hegemony will be forgotten, most living humans couldn't even find you guys on a map.
And again, basic stuff. I'm not going to educate a child or someone that had education on a child's level. Who TF knows, maybe you've been thought creationism in your weirdo backward country.
Typical Belgian asshole, which is also typical of the descendants of European fuckwads who cried instead of fighting back against the Reich and Fascism. I'm sure you pricks will be looking for an external savior again in no time, meanwhile the rest of the world can't find you on a map. Can your military even afford to drive a tank to the border?
Pretty rich bullshit looking at how your cowardice sticks out like a sore thumb.
LOL another american that thinks they ment something in WW2 and think they protect us with their nato protection racket scam. The Soviets alone took out 85% of nazis. The rest was all of Europe together. The US only came in at the end to reap the rewards like the cowardly opportunistic vultures they were. Same as in WW2. Also, even back then the US sucked at fighting and needed to be rescued by Canadians when they got themselves lost. Oh big savior that lost everything from Korea, Vietnam right up to sneaking out of their last base in Afghanistan LOL Embarrassing. No heathcare or education, paid sick leave and what not, all because they want to piss away all of their money on their shit military. And what do you get? The complete failure that is the F-35 and keep failing at making a hypersonic missile. While Russia has 4th gen. China has them India, even Iran. O please tell me savior, who are you going to beat? Grenada? You're a joke. How sad is it making being 'the military country' your whole identity and then completely suck at it. Quicly, go bootlick some loser and thank a fat fuck in his fatigues for his service of wasting your mom's food money? Enjoy your student debt loser. Bye, your blocked
a resident of the most horrific colonial power in all history That pales in to insignificance compared to the US. You get those numbers every decade when youfeel the need to liberate another defenseless country from their resources.
Not fast enough. Look at what it did to Gaza and realize that it can still do that to anywhere else it wants.
What happened in Gaza is a taste of what the undesirables in America are going to face. Especially Israel’s AI targeting tech.
That’s what democrat supporters don’t understand. We can’t accept genocide anywhere, not just for moral and ethical reasons but because genocide will come for us too.
If you're in the US and voted anything but Democrat, or didn't vote at all, then this is your fucking fault.
Fuck the democrats, fuck Kamala. They suck. But look what your rigid morality has made.
OK, you get 4 more years of Biden 2.0, 2028 comes, what's the plan for the elections against Trump 2.0?
Trump will be fucking dead in four years.
I did specify Trump 2.0. It's not Trump, it's the entire Republican party that's gone mask off
good old lefty progressivism reduced to: "look at what trump is doing!"
if you're truly progressive or left, you have as much ire for the democratic party-- if not more.
You're getting downvoted by the same people who got upset by calling out that Kamala and Biden were not good candidates.
If they were, they would have beat this idiot.
The DNC has no idea, nor does it care, what people really need or want. They don't represent our reality. The only Dems who do are... You guessed it: Progressive.
AOC, Bernie, Ro Khana, Cori Bush, Nina Turner... None of them are supported by the establishment wing of the Democratic Party. All of them have people in mind over reelection.
It's time for a sea change.
I think Kamala was an embarrassment that deserved to be called out, Biden is evil, and the establishment often cares more about suppressing progressives than beating Republicans, but I absolutely downvoted that dumb as shit comment.
The Democrats can be responsible for failing to defeat fascism, complicit in genocide and the backsliding of civil rights, and a problem in need of active and forceful change without saying stupid things like they're just as bad as the guy empowering Nazis, destroying the civil service, and persecuting trans people with deadly results.
That's fucking stupid online edgelord politics.
complicit in genocide
stupid things like they're just as bad as the guy empowering Nazis
They're the same picture
In just over three weeks, Donald Trump has been able to redefine the United States’ position in the world from a global power to an international outcast.
This is exactly what people uttering "Make America Great Again" were asking for when they chose Trump to be the figurehead. None should be surprised.
As a European I'm all for it. Fuck up your own country for once and leave the rest alone. Nobody needs the corrupt self-declared policeman of the world
Mate aside from the whole global instability part of it from Australia Im happy for Mango Mussolini to be my president if he crashes the dollar and makes American products cheap as chips to buy
That requires Europe to step up to the plate and actually spin up their own security industry. The United States has been subsidizing it since WWII. In spite of Russia starting a war at your door step Europe still hasn't managed to get their act together.
say what you want about the brits, but they wouldn’t have voted for brexit twice.
Well to be fair, you can’t exit something twice
You might think that, but the United States exited from the Paris agreement on climate change mitigation twice: Trump first withdrew in November of 2020, then Biden rejoined in February of 2021, and now Trump is withdrawing for the second time.
Except the UK didn’t rejoin the EU
