Okay seriously what's up with the homophobia in China?

[–] bystander@lemmy.ca 41 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

To add on, yes there is homophobia, but not the religious "they're going to hell" type. Purely from a reproductive/family lineage stand point. People don't care as much societally, unless it's their own children, because that'll end their own family lineage (but science babies is possible). Especially if it's their only offspring from the result of the one child policy, the parents can be quite upset. If they had like 5 kids, and 1 is homosexual, most modern Chinese people would not care. But laws wise it's still very don't ask don't tell, so there's not many rights, but laws are generally not actively vicious.

Internally, China has been producing a lot of queer media. TV shows, comics, novels, animations etc. so far they mainly just need to not be "pornographic"

The crackdown on the media is bundled with restrictions on overt sexual content (gay or straight), video games, foreign media depicting "feminine" men (ie. Korean media), and whatever else they think distracts from baby making.

But queer media is judged a bit more harshly for sure.

this sounds about right for me. i'd like to note that the one-child policy was replaced by the two-child policy in 2015 and three-child in 2021, with provincial (about the size of a US state) governments like Sichuan able to abolish it entirely. as seen in 2015, the cultural impact of the one-child policy was already too effective, though

i also agree that there isn't much cultural prejudice unless it's one's own. for example with the Harry Potter example mentioned in the article, the Grindlewald–Dumbledore ship has an extremely large following, probably the most popular one across the entire extremely popular franchise in China: https://search.bilibili.com/all?vt=95006627&keyword=GGAD&search_source=5

also worthy of note is that at least Gen X still disgusts at men making out much more than they would for het couples or women doing the same

They've been having a huge crackdown because they believe it's degrading the morals of the young and making them not want to marry and have enough kids. They're cracking down on gooner shit on the men side. The crackdown on gay stuff is targeting the "fujoshi" (women who fetishist gays).

Fujoshi (腐女子) is the Japanese word for what you're mentioning, which I'm sure is not what they're using China. I can offer no further insight than that.

you'd be surprised. I'm not sure which term is the most popular for this, but Japanese ACG terms have been borrowed a ton within the Chinese ACG fandom, which is where you'd use this term. 腐女 is definitely one valid term.

I figured it'd be something similar to that, interesting!

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so dystopian

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That is some intense fragility on display. What's so scary about homosexuality that the CCP has to photoshop the gay away?

The need to breed a workforce

[–] Bot@sub.community 6 points 3 days ago

I learnt Mandarin, they call each other comrade which also means gay in China today :), lol
