My theory is they're further testing the waters about being an animation company. They're working with Illumination on the Mario movies, but if they can do everything in-house and get people to like watching their stuff, they stand a lot to gain.

Also, a good chance. We must remember that Nintendo started with karuta and toys. And then evolvo to games and videogames. They stand for family values, in the japanese sense of the word, so being an animation studio could be aligned to their vision.
