“Ukraine has become the world’s top producer of FPV drones, manufacturing more than 2.2 million units and rapidly expanding its defense industrial base to meet the demands of modern warfare,” leading defense officials said during the Ukrainian Weapons 2024 forum in Kyiv.

“We’ve already begun working with $35 billion in investments and contracts.”

“We’ve ramped up manufacturing of missiles, electronic warfare systems (EW and REW), and ground robotic platforms.”

More than 50% of the materials used in these systems are now sourced locally.

This is good because it helps them right now but can also be a pillar on which to rebuild their economy once this is over. Ukraine could find itself being a major arms exporter, like the South Korea of Europe.

They already were prior to the Russian invasion.

In the sense that they supplied the rest of the former USSR, yes, absolutely — but they didn't have much in the way of international exports.

According to wikipedia, among other things:

In 2012 (by far Ukraine's most successful year of arms export)[11]Ukraine had the status of world's 4th largest arms exporter.

If they were the worlds 4th then they were likely doing a lot more than just the former USSR.

If you read the source you'll notice that year was an enormous outlier and their industry has been in decline for some time. Ukraine was an arms (and shipbuilding) powerhouse under the USSR but has been struggling to regain that prominence.

Locally sourced Ukrainian artisan drones and missiles warms my heart!

Slava Ukraini!

Given the tragedy - and horrible crime - of Russia's war, done investments of this kind make sense.

I suppose that they’re using all the available resources to build drones for the conflict, but I’d definitely choose a Ukrainian FPV drone over a DJI or other Chinese drone if they were commercially available, both to support the Ukrainian economy and to buy within Europe

I'm sure this will turn into a big industry for them once the war ends.

I hope they destroy the Russians so hard they F off for another 40 years. Russian oligarchs should be confined physically and economically to Russia. Any assets outside of Russia should be siezed and given to Ukraine

Any "westerner" that remembers the old Soviet Union might also remember that it was always Ukraine that kept us up at night with worry. They were always the brains and pride of the USSR. Púton REALLY miscalculated.

Can we contribute to the effort by buying any consumer product the same companies may be producing?

I already do.

Well one of the reasons putin-myass wants the country back is because it's rich in materials for building weapons, glad they ramped up production and using the land for defense.

Russia is their biggest customer. 🙂

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And the Ukrainian people don't even take payment! They lovingly give them drones for free.

How cool would it be if they sold drones to anyone to operate in Moskow, crodwsource the war effort

Ya like COD kidz, now's your time to shine! Join the Army remotely and no-strings attached, just as many campaigns as it takes to get them to fuck the fuck off

preprogrammed to hit targets in Russia.

Yes! Call it Telepacifying

I'm thinking of a system as well where you can do mid air handoffs to someone closer. So you fly it 150km, then someone 150km away takes over, and keep getting it further that way.
