Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Come on, Euros, don't fall for American bullshit. Do something about your own shitty leaders who are leading you down the garden path.

[–] ghosthacked@lemmy.wtf 4 points 13 hours ago

Brits are hard-on to ape the American model whilst having a fraction of the economic & military power. Americans can act like morons because at the end of the day they have a 30 trillion dollar strong economy and the world's most powerful military.

Let's see how little Britain fares on the America lite model.

Why is this even on the table... oh yeah:

the hastily agreed trade deal with the US

Fucking $deity I can't believe so many politicians a) play Trump's obvious game and b) still cling to the "USA our friend & ally" narratvie of decades past.

“with respect to automobiles, the United States and the European Union intend to accept and provide mutual recognition to each other’s standards.” Yet, EU vehicle safety regulations have supported a 36% reduction in European road deaths since 2010. By contrast, road deaths in the US over the same period increased 30%, with pedestrian deaths up 80% and cyclist deaths up 50%.

No shit. For once I hope the word "intend" is as empty as it sounds. I don't see the US delivering on that anyhow.

Is there a petition we can sign?

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 12 hours ago

The only shocking part of your data is that we still have pedestrians

the hastily agreed trade deal with the US

I still have so many questions;

  • is there actually a tradedeal and who can supervise it? won't be WTO afaik..

  • according to US law this ( maybe all) recent tradedeals are unconstitutional, as they never passed Congress.

  • whatever deal there is, will still need ratification by EP and memberstates.

I disagree with your use of $diety, as it's not inclusive. It should be an array, not a scalar.

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it could very well be an array

Dear [Jahve, Buddha, Thor] I can't believe so many politicians...

[–] Slotos@feddit.nl 7 points 1 day ago

Sir, this is sh.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

To each their own, so not an array 🤷

What about polytheists then?

[–] lordbritishbusiness@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Yeah, we need JSON at least to support all options. Or possibly some form of quantum object.

If I start seeing these cars around here I’ll start carrying a knife with me and puncturing some tires until their owners get the message.

[–] turdas@suppo.fi 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Green lentils. Open the valve cap, put one in, and screw it back on. If you don't screw it too tight the tyre will deflate slowly and by the time anyone notices it's empty, you'll be long gone.

Also, deflating tyres without damaging them actually might not be illegal in many jurisdictions. In Finland a court ruled that deflating bicycle tyres is not illegal -- the only thing it could fall under was vandalism, but it doesn't cause any damage so it couldn't be vandalism.

[–] kungen@feddit.nu 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It'd be illegal in Sweden as egenmäktigt förfarande. Is there nothing similar in Finland?

For example, if you were to put a lock on someone's bike, would that not be illegal? The idea with egenmäktigt förfarande is that you're disturbing someone's right to use their property.

[–] turdas@suppo.fi 7 points 23 hours ago

I do not know about locking someone else's bike.

The tyre deflation thing is from a court case where a man who was on trial for harassing a woman had deflated the woman's bike tyres while she was in the shop. She came back to find the tyres deflated and had no pump so she rode the bike back to her house with deflated tyres, which damaged the rims. Seeking compensation for the damaged rims was part of her claim, but the court denied the claim because deflating the tyres was not what damaged them, but rather riding back on deflated tyres.

Of course Finnish court system does not work on precedent, so there's no guarantee the same logic would apply to cars, or the sacred steel cow as they are known as here, so it's best to not get caught.

[–] turdas@suppo.fi 4 points 1 day ago

I would, but that's really all there is to it. They have to be uncooked lentils of course, and you may want to wear a disguise and do it at night.

Godspeed. Pack a mask for the inbuilt surveillance cameras.

Where would those monstrosities even go? Aren't the streets of most European countries too narrow for them? Or will they then decide to get rid of all the historical structure to fit some gigantic vehicles that won't even last that long?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago

EU should require a truck class licence, as should NA.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 41 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Kinda. We definitely don't have the parking space for them. But I'm already seeing stupid US pickups (e.g. Dodge Ram) on our streets, their owners just don't care.

Also, a lot of places in Europe don't have much left of their historical structures anyway. There was a great war, and then they bulldozed some more in the 50s to build car infrastructure.

[–] popcornpizza@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I mean, I've seen plenty of narrow streets from walkers in Italy, Spain, and such, with non-modern architecture. I don't mean just museum-grade historical, just normal houses and apartments with a more "classic" look.

Edited to add: Needless to say, destroying all of that will make housing even more expensive in the bigger cities. All for a handful of people's ego trips.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Europe is a big place and in particular Italy is the place to see hundreds of years old narrow streets, and Spain is kind of famous (in certain circles) for heavily concentrating their urban centers despite having a lot of space compared to many other western european countries. You need to have actually had a lot of cities in the time periods where narrow streets were normal, many other countries were very rural until the 19th or even 20th century.

If you want to see European cities with lots of car-friendly infrastructure, look at places that were extensively bombed in WW2, like Germany, England or Belgium, or ones that weren't that urbanized until the 20th century like most countries east of Germany.

[–] DandomRude@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Yes, that's the thing: driving around in such a ridiculous car in the US is stupid enough, but in Europe it's even more so.
