I'll stick to platforms I can install adblockers on, thanks.

I was very surprised to see YouTube was not working on launch day. Considering how popular it is, I thought Nintendo and Google would have had it ready to go. Hopefully they sort it out soon.

That'll be interesting when Nintendo just turns around and sues YouTube for allowing videos of emulators on its platform or for every time a creator even mentions the name Nintendo in an unapproved context.

They are not going to sue Youtube. They are going to sue each content creator. Much more profitable. All the while getting the app for it on the Switch 2 also profiting from free advertisements of their products... until they sue.

Are you being sarcastic? That is not profitable. If it was they'd be doing it now

Haven't there been plenty of lawsuits against Youtubers showing off Switch emulation at least a few years ago? I distinctly remember seeing that and Linus Tech Tips of all people calling them out on only suing small Youtubers who can't fight back and making a comprehensive video themselves.

I wonder if we will stick to only YouTube this time around too, or other streaming apps like Netflix, Prime etc. will also be released.

I'm trying to remember my old school DS and Wii days. I remember both having a web browser and both being particularly bad at playing most videos. What Nintendo consoles have had a dedicated YouTube app? Have any had a streaming app?

I know Xbox and Playstation both tried to turn your console into a home entertainment system, I always assumed Nintendo was consciously not doing that to their consoles

I used the Netflix app on the Wii! The interface was clunky because you had to use the pointer to type into the search bar, and iirc they didn't have the entire Netflix catalogue available, but it DID work.

I don't think my family had Netflix when we had my Wii so that tracks that I don't remember it. Couldn't the Wii only output 480p? I bet that was a bad viewing experience

[–] je_skirata@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, 480p, we had a small TV and didn't need more than that at the time. That was back when the standard HD was 720p and the absolute peak was 1080p. We had a combo DVD/VHS player that probably only output 480p as well. The viewing experience was fine for the time

The Wii had all sorts. At least here in the UK we got YouTube, BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm (later including Amazon Instant Video), Netflix, and Crunchyroll all to download from the Wii Shop Channel. It wasn't the best experience, since the Wii tops out at 480p and most people used composite cables that had a resolution of 480i interlaced, but it was good enough for the time.
