The US prefers extra-judicial murder.
Actually I want to know why. I know it's wrong but I want to justify it with reasoning & I couldn't find the proper words.
There are several reasons you can give.
- Killing someone is irrevocable. Mistakes happen and sometimes it turns out the person was innocent after all. If you kill them, that cannot be set right again and the government will be responsible for the murder of an innocent person.
- It doesn't have any effects on lowering crime, so it's useless as a deterrent.
- One could argue that it is morally wrong to give the government the official power to kill its citizens, even for a seemingly justified reason.
- What purpose does a daeth penalty serve? Is a society with the possibilty for death penalties safer, happier or more stable? If not, why would you kill someone?
If you weigh the reasons against it (especially the always present danger of killing an innocent person) against the benefits (maybe a sense of justice served?), it's just not worth it to have a death penalty.
They're already fine with disappearing people for organ harvesting. There just won't be any 'sanctioned, publically declared' executions anymore.
right wingers are obsessed with it, to not support death penalty is a sign of weakeness for conservatives.
Oh man, what’s my dad going to tell me horror stories about now? He used to talk about how the execution date was kept secret from the prisoners until the morning of, emphasizing how stressful it would be to know that death is coming, but not knowing when and being powerless to stop it. It did deflate his “righteous anger” when I pointed out that that’s the human condition. I’m not supporting the death penalty at all, but that’s not in the top ten reasons it’s fucked up imo
