I'm leaving hospo after almost 20 years at it.

Some pubs around my area have 500k in each redemption terminal and 750k in each atm.

They give out complementary food, have draws for people who get the spins during a timeframe and will pick a winner once a week if they are playing a randomly drawn machine at a certain timeframe. A couple around here do free alcohol in a window (which is highly illegal but they won't get caught).

The machines are a blight on NSW, but that government are completely OK with having another idiot tax around which legitimizes having such large pokie dens in our society.

Are the venues lively though? My only real experience with pokies was a cruise ship casino, and it was so depressing. Just a bunch of bored looking people mindlessly hitting the button.

No amount of raffles and free food makes that sound like a place to be

Yeah sure 'lively' as there are bodies in the building but not much actually going on.

I've got regular players from all different socio backgrounds, some are business owners others smoke rocks to get away from their past / hardships in life. The vast majority are solo players who might make some small talk with others in the gaming area but very few are there to socialise.

Its the same all around here, and probably Australia overall. Very few players that I know spend wisely or set limits.

Outside of the gaming the venue I'm at is lively, the gaming side is quite seperate to the rest of the venue.

We've got around 50 motel rooms out the back so that just adds to the better side of hospitality, being the face or the first contact for people travelling through. Having a small chinwag about what their upto, cracking a joke and grabbing them a drink is a small spark of joy in this industry.
