Gotta get on your knees and beg daddy for help.

My god what a pathetic situation. trump and his freezing FEMA funds is only part of the problem--their own governor doesn't give enough of a shit to do a damn thing about it; he's a magat of course. There's another article linked in the sidebar about him:

Governor Patrick Morrisey held a press conference today to look back on his first 100 days in office. Morrisey says he has made some “meaningful accomplishments” these last 100 days including the passing of 12 out of the 14 bills that he asked the legislature to consider this past session.

Those bills include banning cell phones in public schools, banning certain food dyes, ending state wide DEI programs, lessening regulations for data centers, creating “single-sex spaces” and more.

The topic of flooding was absent from the governor’s address today. The focus of the event was a retrospective of his time in office thus far and the disastrous flooding that killed three people and triggered major disaster declarations in six counties went unmentioned.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDowell_County,_West_Virginia

In 2024, Republican Donald Trump won the largest share of the vote ever for a Republican presidential nominee in the county, garnering 79.4% of the vote.

While it sucks for the 20% who voted against this, odds are damn high that anyone featured in a story is probably in the 80% that voted exactly for this.

The sad thing about this is that probably for most of these folks this will only further confirm their views. Trump and his allies were pushing the idea that FEMA is corrupt and ineffective while Biden was still in office. The Trump admin will argue that this is FEMA's fault, not Trump's. His voters will eat it up.

those vote breakdowns look really weird, how hard and fast the county went from solid reliable democrat to bleeding maga red.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Based on the total vote counts it looks like the vast majority of Dem voters left the county over the years while Rep voters were relatively stable.

1976 Rep: 4,107 Dem: 10,557 almost 15,000 voters

2008 Rep: 2,882 Dem: 3,430 about 6,200 voters

2024 Rep: 4,310 Dem: 1,036 about 5, 300

Indeed. I would put the odds somewhere around 79.4%.

I don't really revel in the suffering of others, even when they voted against their own interests. There are billions of dollars spent manipulating these people.

[–] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

They are victims of lack of education. They are Fox News Zombies. "Internationally, the US ranks 125th for literacy. 54% of Americans between 16-74 read below a sixth-grade level.”: Snopes This is by design, and this has been the American experience since the Reagan administration. This is why it has become more and more expensive for middle class people to get a University education. This is why Trump is going after Universities.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are grown adults so while being manipulated is certainly a problem they are still responsible for falling for it at the individual level. Like how crime is often the result of poverty and other stresses, but we still hold (most) individuals responsible for their actions.

The community is entirely about mocking people who are facing the consequences of voting for those who make them suffer, in case you didn't notice.

The punitive carceral "justice" system is no kind of justice.

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

they mentioned nothing about prisons… they said we hold people responsible. the way we punish is beside the point

the point is that if someone does something bad because they’re the product of a poor environment, we still consider them responsible for their actions

[–] Mooseford@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Do you not see the inherent contradiction in that? Our system punishes people for being products of their environment interacting with their genes. Not reform, PUNISHMENT. Do you take away a child's toys for getting sick?

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

holding people responsible doesn’t necessarily imply prison or punishment… sure the way we do it now is exactly that, but it doesn’t have to be… rehabilitation doesn’t have to be about punishing someone

[–] Mooseford@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

But if their actions are a direct result of their genes and environment, how is that something to be "responsible" for? Are you responsible for being born without legs? The punitive (fine people money they probably don't have anyway) carceral (kick the can of building better conditions down the road for another generation to deal with) system was built primarily to oppress minorities anyhow, so why defend it? Toss it on the scrap heap of history and build something less horrific.

Would say this would be a great moment to do some community outreach and help however I don't know how many resources the democratic party in WV would have to spare and the Democrat who introduced legislation to help fund relief was voted down.

[–] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

FFS! Republicans that were voted in to WV are “Public Servants”!! THEY should be helping their constituents!

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 23 hours ago

The constituents for most US politicians are their donors, not the people in their district.

[–] Zirconium@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Being not Democrats is enough public service for most of these counties

[–] 18USCode2381@infosec.pub 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The state of Western Virginia overwhelmingly, 70%, endorsed and voted for the traitorous policies of Donald Trump.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago

You'll never learn your lesson anyway so vote for another Republican, dipshits. Stay angry at Dems and never consider that the people you support are the ones fucking you over.

[–] EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Two jars of nutella on the same endtable is a whole vibe

Have the day you FUCKIN VOTED FOR

[–] Jimmycakes@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oopsie vote better next time illiterates

[–] grue@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

INB4 Republicans "help" them by condemning their mold-filled and rotting homes and kick them out into the street.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

And buy their home for pennies on the dollar, shoddily fix it, and rent it back to them.

[–] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Natural disasters, combined with reduction of insurance, and lack of federal support may lead to much more of these situations.

The support net has been removed, now everyone can drop to the bottom.

[–] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Good Luck to Florida. Hurricane season will begin in a couple of months. Maybe Trump will throw rolls of paper towels to you.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 23 hours ago

I don't know about Trump even doing that. It seems vaguely communist.
