Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 6 points 11 hours ago

Good lord man it's gone rabid and is shitting in our faces.

I mean ok yeah it's been doing it for a while, but now it's beyond overt.

The big problem, I think, is that a relationship-oriented Europe has hit a transactional American administration. To Trump, you are only a friend if you are convenient. To Europeans, you don't throw away 80 years of alliance over a few poor decisions.

For Macron to say that the US is turning away from its European allies is like filing divorce papers. The Europeans will never consider the US an ally again. Like a recently divorced person, they are lost at sea trying to figure out what's next, but it's not going to be a return to the abusive relationship.

EU vs. Trump/Brexit/etc. has been a very different understanding of the world for years: Win-win vs. Zero-sum. We need to get rid of the latter and push for the better. Win-win should be the foundation of a united world.

Europe has had a long history to look back on. US is still in that teenage hormonal phase and doesn't know what to do despite being spoiled for 80 years.

I do keep thinking about how the USA probably sees itself as β€˜fortress Egypt’, but it’s kinda probably more like the Hittite empire idk*

*this involved and deeply flawed analogy was brought to you by squarespace do you or your buddies need a website or domain in that case you should

The US is also turning on their own people.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The US is turning against white people. It was already against everybody else.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

Only MAGA white now.

Can't say this often enough: Politico is part of Axel Springer, one if the most evil right agitating news agencies you can find in Germany.

How do you block a source? Cause OP is like 10% of @europe

[–] YesButActuallyMaybe@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

Just block op.

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

I don't think it is natively possible via Lemmy, no idea about PieFed. But you can block websites in the Voyager client.

The other way is to block it via DNS. I have blocked it in my home network via Pihole and on my phone when I am not at home I use Rethink:DNS.

I use the following block list: https://github.com/autinerd/anti-axelspringer-hosts

[–] TheBlackLounge@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

Great, I use voyager, thanks!

[–] genau@europe.pub 8 points 20 hours ago

It's garbage media. Whenever I know a thing or two about something they write about it is glaringly obvious that they pull it out of their ass.

Fuck I forgot about this πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Macron is 8 years late with his comments. Helsinki 2018 revealed the orange mofo's intentions and goals.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 40 points 1 day ago

Time for its allies to turn away from the US.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This will affect everyone.... No more travel visas or maybe migration issues like passports not accepted everywhere we go for vacation.

[–] gajustempus@feddit.org 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

if it means we won't send our personal data freely to the US anymore and will FINALLY start to tax all these american firms laundering their immense profits over here, ripping all of us off in the process - that's something I'll whole-heartedly welcome to happen.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 2 points 21 hours ago

Sounds about right. We're basically financial hostages or slaves here. We work, to have companies extract most value off our labor and be left fending for ourselves when the shit hits the fan in health or job loss, divorce, accident etc etc. There's no improvement. My dad made furniture and could barely afford a house. I'm white collar worker and now too can barely afford a house. There's no generational wealth accumulation.

So hopefully big companies extracting wealth from us and up in a big wealth super Nova. Ejecting globs of wealth left and right creating small spin off companies.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

The goons in power are turning on allies and everyone else except those loyal to the old, orange, rapist, felon unless they pledge loyalty or pay him off.

[–] C1pher@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Oh you realized? Fucking finally, now do something. Something productive.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why did it take him so long to figure that out?

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It didn’t, he is just saying it out loud now and the press is amplifying the message.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

France has been barely friends with the US for a long time. That the US has a flee up their bum because of France should be common knowledge by now. The French are unapologetically chauvinist and proud about their culture. They often make jokes about the lack of yank culture. They have been very loud about taxing US companies, they are one of the few European countries that try to have their own military equipment production, they spend inordinate amount of money removing US tech from their government and are loud and proud of their "la French tech".

Charles de Gaulle was pro-Europe and anti-USA long before Macron was even born. The very reason there are jokes about French losing wars is because of US propaganda - it flat out false. France has had a very successful military (to the horror of those who lost against them). They are actually one of the most successful militaries in the world. Yankees have regularly lost against the French in war games.

Just because you're finally aware the French disdain for seppos doesn't change reality.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Okay, so why did it take Macron so long to call the US out? You answered a question I didn't ask.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I answered. He already figured it out long ago. Now's just the acceptable time to say it.

Cause now is the time when the only moderately functional military in western Europe can make her own claim for hegemony.

[–] PracticalFail@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah, they've been a long time, but only since Trump 2.0 made it crystal clear such that even politicians can now see it. So pls guys do something about it. You get a lot of taxpayer money, use it wisely ffs
