!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

MODERATORS

For awhile it was single downvotes, but it seems that moved up to 2-3 on each comment. Even the most benign stuff gets hit, the pattern is clear.

Can I find this person and block them from seeing my posts? Never really delved into how lemmy works.

Probably doesn't matter much because after awhile the forget and leave me alone for a bit.

Don't tell me what to do!

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You can discover who is doing it with Lemvotes

But no, you can't block them. Here in the real world (as opposed to the dystopian centralized platforms that have largely supplanted public discourse), it is not possible to isolate a specific individual and deny them access to information provided freely to the rest of the general public.

Should their public engagement rise to the level of harassment, there are legal options you can take to compel their restraint. But downvoting everything you do does not rise to such a level.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Just search the votes and block them

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 5 points 12 hours ago

OP is asking how to prevent abusers from seeing OPs content.

"Blocking" the abuser prevents OP from seeing the abuser's content. "Blocking" does not prevent the abuser from seeing and interacting with OP's content.

"Blocking" does not achieve OP's objective.

If they gather enough evidence, im sure instance mods could block the abuser's accounts

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 day ago

With all the cranks on here, downvotes are a sign of doing something right. Some instances hide downvotes entirely. Others offer settings to not show them.

Not sure blocking them affects the downvote count shown to you.

I fed a couple of your comments into lemvotes and found out who it was pretty easily. I imagine this is a bannable offense somewhere?

Looks like a normal short term lemmy fight, someone didn't like what they said in a thread and opened their history and downvoted everything on the first screen. Going back 3 days and the downvotes stop.

lemmy.world appears to be their main account, this seems to be the post that triggered them do do their downvoting spree: https://lemmy.world/post/41260627

Looks like the sock puppet master was angry for about 20 minutes, and got tired of manually downvoting. Still pretty terrible vote manipulation making lemmy a hostile place.

2 of these accounts have been deleted

[–] Username@lemmy.nz 21 points 2 days ago

I think on the original offending post, OP made some somewhat inflammatory comments about ADHD and Autism further down. I imagine the downvoter felt personally hurt by these comments, hence the temporary spree, driven mostly by emotion. I don’t agree with the vote manipulation but not knowing their full story I would caution against people coming across this and retaliating against this person. It seems like it was just a short response and hopefully they have had a chance to cool off now.

Neat! Don't think I have the energy to do much about it, but that's a great site, thank you very much!

Lemvotes is a pathway to many discoveries some consider to be depressing.

Surprised the offender has a db0 account...

Downvotes aren't that big of a deal my friend.

[–] SolidShake@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (6 children)

No matter what you post, someone will downvote it. It simply just doesn't matter

I'm going to say - get over it.

This is not Reddit, where downvoting would actually prevent you from posting.

This is the Fediverse, where, you can keep going. Who gives a fuck?

The whinier you are about being downvoted, the more I think you deserve it. Just like anyone who I've come across who has amassed a lot of upvotes, turned out to be the biggest assholes I've come across.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I had a Reddit account get to the special place for people who got over 100,000 upvotes. The sub was full of assholes.

Also I’m an asshole so you’re theory checks out.

[–] pyrinix@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I remembered being randomly gilded and you got to go into that special subreddit for gilded users. Same deal.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Yeah I never had to pay for Reddit because I got gold for my comments.

Which were normally something sarcastic.

It’s kinda like the algorithm for social media. What gets engagement? Bad shit.

So if you get a group together who is good at that… you’re kinda surrounded by broken people lol

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

The whinier you are about being downvoted, the more I think you deserve it.

I would argue that his massive history and modlogs of him being a shitty person with inflammatory comments and toxic takes are why he deserves it. It should be obvious that after two years of mod corrective actions for egregious behavior he's not going to change.

Him doing the "oh, woe is me" act here feels pretty hollow.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

How could OP not have seen this coming?

[–] Darkenfolk@sh.itjust.works 0 points 22 hours ago

Most of these look more like mods power tripping because he said something they didn't like than anything.

Blocking a user only stops you from seeing them, not the other way around. They can still interact with your posts.

[–] Cromer4ever@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

A few negative votes don't affect you in real life, do they?

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (10 children)

Is it because of that time you were defending pedophilia and regurgitating MAP talking points?

EDIT: or maybe it's the constant repulsive content that has resulted in pages, and pages, and pages of mod actions for years? For things such as: racism, transphobia, actual antisemitism, advocating violence, racism again, and look...

pedophile apologia again...

Man... I wonder why people would downvote you..... it's a a real headscratcher.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 13 points 1 day ago

I'm not seeing that, pedophilia is a condition and the user was responding in earnest to a comment asking "why?". I personally would not conflate this with defending child molesters

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 15 points 2 days ago

Nothing about that comments comes across as defending it. Also, pedophilia is not synonymous with sexual abuse.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago (8 children)

I mean it's a shitty take and really doesn't evidence good understanding of the topic (I used to work forensic psych and have met a LOT of pedophiles) but as far as shitty internet takes go it's meh at most and wild to me that you went to the effort to dig that out from two weeks ago for this discussion.

To prove you wrong I down voted this post and I don't remember any interactions with you in the past.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago

I highly recommend going into settings and hiding downvotes from yourself. Stick to dealing with the people who at least bother to engage in written form.

Downvoting is lazy and adds zero value. It's pure masochism to let yourself get even a tiny bit annoyed just because some rando on the other side of the world spent 0.5 seconds clicking a down arrow on your comment - which they probably didn't even read to the end.
