Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

*American garbage

FTFY Vancey

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

He then went on to say..."Only Americans should attack others!". Old Hillbilly Ugly.

US companies should not influence european politics and elections further to the right with their garbage algorithms and european politics should protect Europe from that.

Go fuck a couch.

I agree. We should just stop using them. If all official accounts within the EU move to Mastodon, journalists and people will follow. Additionally, that supports the EU economy.

Idiots can stay on X. Enjoy.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Haven't many moved to Bluesky already? X is for Muskstans i.e. losers and bigots only these days.

[–] troed@fedia.io 31 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Bluesky is like X. Owned by american venture capitalists. EU needs something for official communication that's neither under US nor under commercial control.

[–] gajustempus@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

We've got Mastodon for that

[–] Europellinore@europe.pub 1 points 1 day ago

American and owned by American capitalists might be a big disadvantage, but that doesn’t automatically equals it to the nazi deepfake porn platform for foreign troll armies that X has become. Europeans better move to mastodon, but still moving to Bluesky is way better than staying at X. Bluesky is basically similar to X a decade ago. No sane and intelligent person in the world can deny that Twitter a decade ago was way better than C today.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ah fair enough. Yes then, a non-US version would be good. I never use any of them personally.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

Like a european mastodon instance?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh there's a large number of people who can't be arsed to move or who claim "i have to use it for my business", "I have it but I don't use it" and like that.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 3 points 2 days ago

I'm in that second category. But I count for nothing as I never open it (I haven't in probably 10 years, certainly never opened X, only Twitter) so those people don't really matter.

If you have decent things to say, your audience will follow you (or you build a new audience). Look at us, we're all probably ex-redditors and we're now all on here. Platform changing is possible.

Vice President JD Vance calls the US government and top CEOs Garbage

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 24 points 2 days ago

A reminder that the garbage is a white supremacy echo chamber and child pornograph generation.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bann all of the tech companies from outside EU. Tiktok as well. Then it's also a solution to Vances problem.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ban all of the commercial tech companies. Non-profits do not pose a danger to European sovereignty, as European devs can contribute and fork from it mostly.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I have no problem in social medias earning Monty on the userbase. But if it's from Salling peoples private data it should be jailtime.

[–] petrescatraian@libranet.de 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean it's their garbage...

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Imagine if americans started exporting their landfills to Europe, and Europe tried passing legislation to prevent this, and americans went "But it's a free market, you shouldn't make any laws restricting trade. If someone in Europe wants to buy american garbage, then they should have that option!"

That's essentially the argument I've heard americans make about importing american chicken to the UK, and the same mentality is obvious here.

Ask them what that says about their tariffs and they'll go "wtf are you talking about? that's different!"

[–] CaptObvious@literature.cafe 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not all of us. There are still sane people here

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh fine, it's just the maga crowd. But they're an extremely loud minority.

Btw, I'm american, I just wish I could renounce that affiliation...

[–] CaptObvious@literature.cafe 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are, indeed, very very loud.

And I hear you about finding a different affiliation. But I’m not sure who’s still open to people fleeing the US these days

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 7 hours ago

Yeah, it's not easy to get a permanent residency without family ties or a career in tech...

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

He's so fucking desperate to matter to someone, anyone.

[–] krigo666@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Dunce at it again.

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 5 points 2 days ago

Fuck greedy ass American companies, we've put up with enough of their shit, even gave them corporate personhood for some stupid fucking reason, but even that's not good enough for these greedy assholes, and they want MORE MORE MORE. It's time to shut it down, just stop buying anything, fuck these clowns.
