I've said this before, but Canada needs to start manufacturing drones. Like yesterday. Put the factories far from the border.

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

The United States can't manufacture shit so yeah, Canada should step up and prepare.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (10 children)

Canada needs to put the Gripen factory on an accelerated track, cancel the entire F-35 order, and move ahead with an immediate purchase of min. 50 Gripens using the F-35 funds to cover the gap and train up pilots until Gripens start rolling out of the factory.

Canada’s complete F-35 promise will cost the country $28,000,000,000 ($28B) with billions more needed to bring them up to full operational efficiency, and yet the Gripen costs only $65,000,000 ($65M) per aircraft, allowing us to buy 430 fully-functional Gripen jets instead of 88 partially functional F-35 jets.

Remember: tech superiority does not win battles. Sheer numbers do. WWII demonstrated this overwhelmingly on many different fronts, with many different technologies.

As just one example, the Germans had Tiger tanks that could face off against 6-8 Shermans at a time and win with barely a scratch on their hull, but when 10, 20, or even more came roaring over the hilltop for every Tiger that was fielded, their tech superiority ended being absolutely useless. They got overrun and overwhelmed with sheer numbers.

The F35 can be rendered equally as useless with enough Gripens in the air.

And the Gripens don’t come with a remote kill switch like the F-35 does.

Agree with everything you say, and yes quantity has a quality of its own, but I think that in addition we should fly the Gripens and the F35s that we have against each other and figure out how to beat the F35s with the Gripens. Then share that info with our new allies. If we need to modify or augment the Gripens then we can work with the Swedes to do that.

Competent pilots cost too. We need to invest in unmanned capabilities much more. All humans should just be behind their desks fighting a war remotely from Hawaii or something

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's a funny Canadian place.

Us gear has kill switches in it.

Not only that, for decades now it's been rumoured the us has secret code on most all computers, a kill switch, blue screen of death.

I bet corporations have their own.

The rest of NATO needs to step up and make a military exercise off the coast of Canada as a show of force that it shouldn't be messed around with even among allies.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Canada itself should start a military exercise where it practises laying landmines. No need to practise picking them up though, there's plenty of time for that later.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

That would be a violation of the Ottawa treaty.

And landmines don't actually stop an army, they just slow it down and inhibit maneuver.

The supplementary reserve of 300,000 citizen soldiers that's being planned is a better idea. There would be no stopping a US invasion, but 300,000 resistance fighters ensures the US would lose the occupation, as it usually does.

Close

The

Border

Shut the lights off. Stop the oil. Sell the bonds.

Time to pull that bandaid off.

[–] keyhoh@piefed.social 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would say stop selling the potash so there's a famine. The one thing that causes all dictators to be overthrown from within, is a couple missed meals in a row. The whole world should get Americans to fight America by shutting then off from sustenance until the mess they created is cleaned.

Lmao, straight up he’s got no fucking attention span or patience. He’s just going in circles pushing on issues, trying to find one that will budge with just mean words rather than having to spend money or do anything material.

He wants some sort of “win” something concrete he can point to and say “look how much we’re winning” because his poll numbers are in the toilet. He’s surrounded him self with incompetent yes men who keep failing to give him meaningful results, and he’s terrified of losing the house and senate in 11 months.

Read the article, people.

He’s actually taking a much softer stance on Canada, and that’s worth paying attention to.

Oh, I’m not saying he has benevolent intentions toward Canada, lol.

But he’s not looking to get us particularly riled either.

One, he wants to keep tensions with Europe away from his border.

Two, he is deathly afraid that real Americans that haven’t drunk his kool-aid will have a place to flee, regroup and fight.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah and to be honest we DO need to do more to protect the Arctic. We just also need to protect ourselves form the jackasses south of the border.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

canada are you still visiting DISNEY, florida, dont.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Boycott US products and services in general too. Switch your online accounts to non-US companies. If you have investments, pull them out of the USA.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

For the Canadians : shop app is a part of shopify to replace Amazon. Plus you can filter it to Canadian only. Canadian tire is like Amazon but in RL.

Petrocan

Go Canada computers instead of best buy

Gem

Kobo instead of kindle or audible.

Where you can’t find a Canadian substitute for American: get a European one. They are usually way better quality than American anyways. Better standards

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Petrocan stock is majority owned by an American hedge fund. Elliott Investment Management.

Unlike with Greenland, U.S. officials say Trump isn’t trying to annex Canada. Instead, he aims to partner with Prime Minister Mark Carney to shore up the country’s defenses

Does anyone else think these threats against Greenland -- and earlier, Canada -- might be intended to spur increases in other nations' defense spending? If Trump pushes all of Western Europe and Canada buying billions of dollars of military gear (through threats or "partnerships") most of that funding is going to defense contractors in the USA.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I doubt Trump realizes or intends that, because his brain is basically pudding, but it's possible his handlers/donors in the military complex are pushing for it.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (2 children)

He's a Russian asset. He's trying to destabilize the US as well as NATO, and our other allies. The more time we spend on infighting, the less likely we'll be to stand up to our enemies

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If he’s not a Russian agent, I don’t see how an actual one could do a better job destabilizing the US and NATO than he is.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

its either him, or thier backup agents in the gop, and of course TULSI gabbard.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

pretty obvious hes using all the russian talking points too.

[–] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Just shut the fuck up already. We’re all done with you.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 43 points 3 days ago (1 children)

and the US isn't getting a pass when this is over. maybe in a few generations IF they hold the fascists to account and implement systemic change.

[–] shittydwarf@piefed.social 32 points 2 days ago (3 children)

40% of Americans are all in on this shit, with another 10% undecided, fuck that country

All the Greenland story is about Canada mostly IMO.

[–] updn@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Bring it fucking on! No longer elbows up, time to drop the gloves!

Fighting Nazis sounds fun. Pussies.

It's gonna be fuckin miserable and agonizing but it'll be a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago

The alternatives are:

  1. Fight the nazis

  2. Nazis

We'll that would be an interesting front on the upcoming war with the rest of NATO.

Seems like fucking with Canada would not be the best idea. Didn't work out so well for America the last time it happened (the war of 1812). And this time Canada would have more allies in the fight than just a small contingent of the Britain military and some of the native American tribes.

It feels like the world is in a late game stage of Civilization and the most recent hotseat player is just fed up with the grind and feels like nuking something.

You'd think Orange Moussealini would have learned that where Hitler went wrong was fighting more than one front at a time. He thinks just because the US has the strongest military it can beat anybody, but he, and his peabrained cabinet, doesn't have the mental capacity to understand that invading a country is easy; holding land indefinitely is very difficult. Let alone multiple countries at once.

The absolute arrogance of someone this stupid is astounding. And yet millions of people voted for him as many as 3 times. This truly is one of the worst timelines
