Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

It should be thrown away, together with the Digital Omnibus (which only favors US Big Tech).

Let's start all over when the idiot calms down.

JD Vance as president will almost certainly be worse for everyone.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago

Depends on how the orange paedo dies...

If it's by natural causes, then it's possible the couch fucker could be worse.
If it's by hanging from a rope then lowered into a guillotine for choppy choppy time then I'm pretty sure things will be different.

[–] Swemg@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

Maybe, but it will feel so good tho

[–] devfuuu@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

More than one individual can die at any time...

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Thing is, the election was rigged.

Vance isn’t really the rightful owner to the throne.

The fact that elections can be rigged, bragged about and not investigated, means it will happen again.

Honestly he will simply cancel all elections now (at least until the only party you can vote for is his party).

Sorry folks, this is the end of a 250 year empire unfolding before our eyes, not much you can do about it except to not be Chamberlain about it.

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago

Vance doesn't have the life time of propaganda training Trump has. He'd be crushed.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I guess "when their period end" was never an option.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 7 points 3 days ago

"Women are too emotional"

Meanwhile Trump...

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Vance will immediately catch all the blame for Trump's actions. I do not envy his upcoming role.

The cultists are aware on some level that this is all madness, but they've committed, can't change their support.

“It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.”

None of them rallied for Vance, and they'll eat him alive the second he's sworn in. With Trump dead, "These OTHER people fooled me!"

That usually calms them down, but there are too many of them waiting for that and to step up.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Nothing changes when he dies, other than a great party and wicked hangover. The Fascists are still in power, and they won't have Nappy Mcpoopypants to stupid things up so much. Trump is the face of the problem, not the problem itself.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It ALL changes when Trump dies, overnight. No cult survives the death of the leader. Vance steps in, he's immediately to blame for everything Trump did. Many of these fanatics are looking for an offramp from the madness, but they can't turn on Trump. (They don't know this, but they need a way to say they weren't wrong.)

Or, look at it from another angle, you think MAGA gives two shits about Hegseth, Miller, Bondi, Vought, Kennedy, Noem, et. al.? LOL, man-on-the-street doesn't have a clue who those people are, but they'll turn into targets without Trump's cover.

OR, think on this. Would Germany have continued down the Nazi path if Hitler had died early in the game? Hell, even if he died late in the game, think the people would have rallied behind Goebbels or Dönitz?

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago

In Nazi Germany, there is no way to tell because it didn't play out that way.

I look to China, Russia and North Korea and I see evidence that power can survive succession.

I hope you are right, but I wouldn't count on it.

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Trumpnappears to be compromised by Putin, if might be safe to assume the next person wont be.

Trump appears to have dirt on a ton of powerful people due to their involvement with Epstien and other child rape clubs. I hope the next person has no such leverage.

Without out the threat of russian assassination or blackmail, maybe the whole ugly thing unwinds with trump? One can only hope.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

if might be safe to assume the next person wont be.

This sentence seems to disagree with the one before and the one after. Russian muckymuks have leverage on the POTUS, the NRA, the GOP and god knows where else.

There is no reason to believe anything will improve once the child rapist is gone.

If I threaten to assault my smaller friendly neighbor if he doesn’t give me part of his house and 1 of his kids, my neighbor who had my back after 9/11 and fought and died alongside my brothers in Afghanistan, and then apologists for me say “well he doesn’t really mean to execute his threat to assault you”, that does not make me a shrewd negotiator. It makes me a psychopathic garbage ally. That friend will seek other big allies. Don’t be surprised when this makes America poorer. If Trump keeps this up, you think Europe will have our back after another 9/11?

[–] moderatecentrist@feddit.uk 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If Trump keeps this up, you think Europe will have our back after another 9/11?

You're right. As you said, Europeans supported the US after 9/11, and died in Iraq and Afghanistan in order to help the US. The only time that NATO article 5 has ever been invoked, it was Europe helping the US. I guess Trump and his administration have no appreciation of that at all.

Like you say, Europeans will not want to help the US if a time comes. Public opinion will be against it.

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Trump is simply narcissistic, racist, and demented. He only cares about himself and how he can profit and stay out of jail. Thats all there is to it.

It makes no sense to me when all of these heads of atate try to play chess with trump. He's to stupid for chess, just assume he'll do the selfish racist thing and you will be correct 98% of the time.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Anyone who's been around someone with a serious case of NPD, or a toddler, knows exactly how to play Trump. EU leaders tried some of those games, but now that his dementia is off the cliff, he's no longer predictable, time to cut the cord and get it over with.

Easy to say, I know. I'm not responsible for my country's economy and citizen welfare.

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You're right. As you said, Europeans supported the US terrorism after 9/11

This reminiscence sound so pathetic. Helping invade and kill innocent civilians aint supporting, you fuckwits were complicit in war crimes.

died in Iraq and Afghanistan in order to help the US

Ya, that happens when you invade people.

This sudden call for morals when you're the one in danger of being invaded is hilarious.

Fucking hypocrites.

[–] moderatecentrist@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

I'm not in favour of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I'm definitely not in favour of civilians being harmed. The point is that America asked for help after 9/11 and Europeans did help, with some giving up their lives.

hilarious

Maybe you're similar to the tankies then, who claim to be anti-imperialist, but who are actually pro-imperialism as long as the West is on the receiving end of pain.

Technically, stay where you are but keep working on this EU. I'll probably lose my job since our customers are all European.

Man this sucks.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Pauses? PAUSES? Fucking cancel it now, the head of a fascist state threatened a military invasion against you and all you do is temporarily pause a new trade deal with that same state?

They should be trying to stop all trade right now and pivot to different markets, european companies need to start looking for a US market exit, and treasuries need to start looking for US debt buyers. EU needs start re-industrializing and arming up, ideally with nukes, because US leadership openly claims it will not care about anything except sheer military power.

Who am I kidding, european leaders are vassals to the US and will not stand up to US aggression until it's too late and they are invaded or overthrown. Maybe a real Greenland invasion would wake them up without irreparable damage to the power structures, but it's probably not happening now (they must have caved on something to trump already). They are deliberately ignorant of their fate because quarterly profits must increase. Shame on them.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Is Europe joining Trump and Netanyahu’s for profit genocide clean up committee because I think that will say a lot about who the leadership works for

[–] ardorhb@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 3 days ago

Good. IMHO this deal should have never been made.
