The US was buying pork from China (article says they make up ~50% of the world’s supply). Not understanding these ‘cheap pork’ comments…

U.S. pork imports are now facing a 172 percent tariff, the U.S. Meat Export Federation said, according to Bloomberg News.

Americans have this deeply ingrained misunderstanding of their trade relationships with the rest of the world, that's why it was so easy to mislead majority of them into believing whatever the fuck nonsense they voted for.

[–] zulfiqaramer@lemmings.world 1 points 8 hours ago

? Why would they lower prices after people have already shown they're willing to pay what's posted?

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes! Bacon sandwiches on discount.

Oh wait, no they will just keep the price difference because they suck.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why are you guys talking about cheap pork? This is the opposite of that.

I just woke up but it seems obvious?

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah I thought the point is more expensive pork since we're importing them from China. What are these guys saying and why are they getting upvoted?

[–] YerbaYerba@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is exports to China. They are they buyers and they cancelled the orders.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Man, I had to read the linked sources to understand what was going on. How do you write all this and it doesn't even make sense.

The title maybe makes it sound like china was buying pork from the US. Maybe since usually it’s a buyer that would cancel an order (as a seller would usually sell to anyone willing to pay the market price.)

I had no idea our pork comes from china. Good thing I don't eat red meat anymore

[–] YerbaYerba@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

These are pork exports to China

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn’t pork considered white meat?

[–] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Some cuts of pork are considered white under the culinary definition, but all pork is considered red meat in nutritional studies.

From Wikipedia.

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

Did not know that

[–] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

All of the bacon and booze not exported, will help swallow down the misery.
