Trump is curious as to why Iran has not yet "capitulated" and agreed to curb its nuclear programme, as Washington builds up its military capability in the Middle East, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said.

“I don’t want to use the word ‘frustrated,’ because he understands he has plenty of alternatives, but he’s curious as to why they haven’t... I don’t want to use the word ‘capitulated,’ but why they haven’t capitulated,” Witkoff said in an interview on Fox News on Saturday.

“Why, under this pressure, with the amount of seapower and naval power over there, why haven’t they come to us and said, ‘We profess we don’t want a weapon, so here’s what we’re prepared to do’? And yet it’s sort of hard to get them to that place.”

Trump has ordered a huge buildup of forces in the Middle East and preparations for a potential multi-week air attack on Iran. Iran has threatened to strike U.S. bases if it is attacked.

I mean tbf Saddam didn't capitulate before desert storm but that was because he actually thought he'd win.

Iran seems to be in the boat of "nothing to lose" which really shouldn't be a new concept to the US.

It's bring your child to work day in the US government now every day. Only the child is a geriatric buffoon with the emotional and intellectual complexity of a 3 year old and he's calling all the shots unchallenged by any adult in the room.

Never forget that more than 50 % of the US voters knew exactly what was coming, had previous experience with him fucking things up for 4 years straight and went "yeah, sounds like a solid guy to vote for".

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 8 hours ago

100% knew what was coming, 50% were raising any alarm bell they could, other 50% are just dumb as fuck I guess, or recist as fuck

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 2 points 5 hours ago

No, just less than 50% of voters. He didn't even win a simple majority of the popular vote.

Cause the last time they made a deal he just tore it up. Why make another deal he will just tear up?

Trump does not have the political capital or patience for a sustained military campaign. He will only attack a target he thinks will immediately fold and give him an easy victory. Deterring him is easy – just let him know you'll fight him, win or lose, for as long as possible.

Trump? Curious? Lol, no. Trump confused!

I think he, like many, mistakenly think Iran is like other countries in the region that the US bullied in recent decades. He probably doesn’t listen to his command staff much, who no doubt tell him this is a foe much greater than you suspect.

Subterfuge there is one thing, but outright aggression is going to be very painful for everybody involved.

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 hours ago

I think he knows, and was just banking on taking advantage of them with empty threats while theyre in the middle of the internal problems.

Heck el on mu sk with his "brand management team," and bot army could be part of the plan by trump, and the reason for the unrest anyways.

Witkoff's word is worth less than nothing. What is clear, Israel is forcing this war with their Epstein blackmail. Consequences be damned, they are starting the forever war they can restart by reaching across and bombing under pretext at any time, for their domestic politics, as Iran is their great bogeyman, even as they are virtually powerless to respond to attacks.

There never was a plan beyond the current state

There is a plan, just not from the president, this is Israel's plan, using their epstein blackmail to start the third persian gulf war that will simmer for decades, restarted by Israel reaching across the border to blow shit up and assassinate people with impunity periodically, as Iran is near powerless to respond to advanced aerial attacks.
