Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

IMHO, this time round, only without special treatment and only if adopting the Euro.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago (3 children)

And they have to start driving on the right side of the road.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

That would be a huge hassle for Ireland.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Ireland drives on the left also and is an eu member. Why should Britain rejoining, which messed is up first time round lead to more annoying changes for us when they rejoin. Were both islands seperate from the continent, so it shouldn't affect things to keep the status quo.

If it has to be done, we should at least phase it in. Perhaps have professional drivers like taxis or trucks switch first and then cars next and learner drivers last. Should ease the transition.

In all seriousness, I can see a future where we move to self driving cars and they don't have a preferred side for the wheel or controls, so at one point it would make sense to change everything over to be consistent. However, at that point, it would not make sense to have roads being used in a system designed for human use. The roads should just be used as efficiently as possible, which might mean tidal lanes etc or abandoning lanes altogether and cars just.using the space that their size needs.

FYI: the UK can rejoin the EU but will never get the sweetheart deal they had when they Brexited

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 week ago

Which I think is fair TBH. We had a sweet deal, but we fucked it up by being idiots. No reason to give us special treatment, dumb actions have consequences.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

why would EU entertain Breturn? Even if they did allow this, UK would just exit again in a few years.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because they are a big fucking economy and we're stronger together.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Then why did they leave? I thought Brussels was stealing all the money, and if UK goes back, what will happen to the 200 million a year the NHS gets?

Buses dont lie.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You need to accept the fact that even idiots can realize they were lied to now and then. It seems like enough British idiots noticed in this case.

[–] FuzzyHerbivore@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What on earth makes you believe that "enough British idiots noticed" they were lied to? Reform UK is at 26% in polls, was at 30% not long ago... that's double what UKIP ever had before Brexit. Idiocy doesn't just disappear, even the most naive should have realized that after Trump's return.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 1 points 1 week ago

They will acknowledge they may have been lied to about one thing while happily swallowing all the other lies they've been told. I didn't say they stopped being idiots, just that in the face of overwhelming proof some of them would recognize a mistake or two.

[–] Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 week ago

Im sure they can. Not on the get go but over time.

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unfortunately, it’s much harder to fix a porcelain vase than breaking it.

[–] bonenode@piefed.social 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Kintsugi could be the metaphor to use for this case

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Do you mean they should throw a lot of gold to fill in the gaps?

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

It might cost time and money to fix but the end result can be beautiful. Getting there can also have purpose beyond the end result.

Sure it already was nice and functional, but if it's now broken, you either fix it or have a broken vase.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

First sign. They weren’t β€œfor” it in the first place.

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago

What signs? Did they finally find Keir's balls?

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 13 points 1 week ago

There is no other choice, assuming they don't want to get even poorer

Labour sits below 20% in the polls, Reform UK above 25%. So who cares what Labour wants, the country clearly still has a problem with gullible idiots listening to whatever Farage is spouting, arguably more so than before Brexit where UKIP was around 15%. EU should not waste time with a "Breturn" right now and instead find ways to reform so that traitors like Orban can't block everything and to get Ukraine in ASAP.

[–] BigBenis@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bre-enter doesn't really have the same ring to it...

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most of the people who voted for it are either dead or pretending that voted remain now. Political sentiment has definitely shifted towards rejoin at some point.

Are we ready for the fight yet though? Probably not. But we can definitely have closer and closer alignment to smooth the way

[–] Pip@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Avoiding the fight sounds like a bad idea. It's great that public sentiment has shifted!

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Exactly, especially when the brexit side won by using misinformation and discrediting experts (without any facts, of course). Now people can see through their lies with their own experience.

They can't claim the money goes the the NHS. The NHS is less funded now. They can't claim Britain is stronger alone. They early aren't. They can't pretend they will make better deals elsewhere. That didn't pan out and America is not a reliable ally. Barely an ally at this point. They can't complain about eu decided standards, as they have now discovered that they still need to comply. They can't complain about immigration as that didn't stop, by necessity, it just shifted to different nationalities, usually with less recognised training and skills.

Soon I think, Trump and his mentalness is hopefully pushing more and more people to the realisation that we need to be close politically, militarily and economically to our European neighbours, rather than the Yanks.

Hopefully it'll be something at the next election, it would be a very good way for Labour or others to set themselves against Reform.

[–] xav@programming.dev 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They don't really want it. As always they want the benefits but don't want to participate financially and socially.

[–] d00ery@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Brexit vote was 52% for leave. Intelligence is a bell curve...

Anyone with any sense knew leaving a free trade agreement with our biggest trading partners, and the ability to influence the rules on that trade and standards, was a fucking stupid idea. Unfortunately it's easy to prey on stupid people.

Also, I'd argue that the UK and French/German culture and values are generally a lot closer than the rest of the wider world - we're neighbours and have a lot of shared language and history.

[–] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Heh. News corporation says otherwise.

Starmer will have to ask Israeli handlers if that’s allowed

In a war that benefits Israel only

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It’s a verified fact that the Israeli lobby owns his party
