Certainly the ruling class understands it. When it became necessary and beneficial for capital to include women in the workforce during WWII they did so. But they also benefit from the preservation of the nuclear family because it represents unpaid reproductive labor that allows more extraction of profits from workers. It's not about what benefits society as a whole more, you have to think about the class interests that are at play. Of course the working class would benefit from the socialization of domestic labor (and labor in general), but what about the capitalists?
