The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?

I'll start... my name's "MrShankles" and I do be commenting/posting from time to time

I recognise your mum

[–] Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 hours ago

I recognize a decent number of people, lots of famous frequent posters have already been mentioned but I also tend to remember trolls and people with bad takes.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 hour ago

The big ones I recognize:

  • SatansMaggottyCumFart
  • Stamets
  • The Picard Manuever
  • poVoq
  • PugJesus
  • fossilesque
  • Cowbee
  • ComradeSharkFucker
  • ThefuzzFurryComrade
  • lumpenproletariat
  • GodlessCommie
  • Bad
  • UniversalMonk

There's a few more that I can't think of off the top of my head. It's nice that the community is small enough to recognize people so often.

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

I feel like I often recognize others, but I obviously can't tell who I don't recognize 🤷

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago

I don't really pay attention. I come here to quip. It's like a mental purge for me.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Never had anyone recognize me (I post and comment sparsely and in short bursts) but I recognize a lot of other names. Most of which I'm sure the average Lemmy user recognizes.

I don't really pay attention to user names when I read, but there are a few frequent posters that I've recognized

[–] triple_entendre@infosec.pub 5 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

There's a few big names, I usually find it interesting seeing which instances people are on and whether they carry some kind of theme. The people in the Star Trek instance, forget the name, usually have pretty good memes for example

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Ten Forward is the place to be

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 1 points 8 hours ago

Picard or something I know the bloke your talking about

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 points 10 hours ago

One think you can rely trekkies on for

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 15 hours ago (4 children)

I tag users occasionally when they stand out to me, so I recognize those people but often forget why I tagged them as such lol

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I honestly thought I had tagged more users

I mostly only tag users whom I read as reasonable enough to have a discussion with initially, but I’ve learned it doesn’t go well. And the booooooomer tag is for the prolific poster of boomer-ass memes.

(The combination of green and a positive vote count makes it look like I might be down for Islamophobia, but I just wanted a different color and I feel weird interacting with someone’s comments/posts after I’ve tagged them, because I’ve essentially prejudiced myself against them, so if they’re positive when I tag them, they’ll stay that way)

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I hate that I instantly knew who you were talking about the moment you said boomer memes.

I color my own tags based on an escalating system of good/bad impressions - so someone who posted questionable opinions or insulted other commenters once or twice gets a dull gray, a repeat offender gets bumped up to yellow, and someone who's shown a long-term pattern of toxic behavior gets the dreaded red tag. I save blocks for people who contribute absolutely nothing positive to the Fediverse - I think I have a few hundred tagged users but less than a dozen blocks.

Similarly, good posters go from white to blue to green, though since Voyager keeps track of and displays lifetime vote totals I only tend to tag the truly memorable posters.

[–] SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I didn't know this was a thing.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 14 hours ago

ROFL! I've always wondered if anyone had tagged me. Now I know!

[–] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

That is such a cool feature. I should use this!

[–] topherclay@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Its hilarious seeing the same "absolutely insane" tag that I have used.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I only tend to recognize the users I have assigned custom tags to. Usually to mark them as trolls or suspected bots, but sometimes just because they told a funny story or are enthusiastic about something specific.

[–] Jela@lemmy.today 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

TIL you can assign custom tags to people.. can users see what they've been tagged as?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago (6 children)

So far, nobody's mentioned recognizing me, despite the fact that I feel like I comment a lot (an unhealthy amount, really).

I'm not sure whether to feel insulted or relieved.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I recognize your name and have no negative memories of your comments

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Are you cursed or something? I have you at +194/-1 but only vaguely recognize your name. I have no idea how I've interacted with someone (let alone a classic video game reference) so many times without forming an opinion of them!

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

There is a good point to have for low profile lurkinators

[–] softwarist@programming.dev 3 points 13 hours ago

There't something about your username that sounds…gruesome…

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

I recognize you!

In the sense I'm scared of the grues.

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 3 points 17 hours ago

I for one, enjoy being a faceless number lol

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I don't recognise many, but there are a few that pop up regularly like PugJesus, Picard Maneuver and K O L O N A K I.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I miss flying squid. Hope he's doing well

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

Huh, it's been a minute since I've seen KOLONAKI around

[–] early_riser@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

There are a few users I seem to run into regularly, but as with Reddit it's mostly disembodied thoughts floating in the ether. I personally prefer the more personal interactions of old forums. I feel like if anyone here knows me, it's as that guy who's constantly whining about how political everything is on here and won't shut up about his ultra-niche hobbies.

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

Oh man, lots. Ada, Kolanki, WorldsDumbestMan, SatansMaggottyCumFart, Neidu, LadyButterfly, CaptainLezbian, CptAggravated, that one guy with the Chinese symbols whose mom is a piece of work, Stamets when he's posting, Sunshine, Blaze, DistantSounds, Sodalite - the list goes on and on.

I may spend too much time here, lol.

[–] felsiq@piefed.zip 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I use voyager and don’t see display names, but I’m willing to bet the person with a Chinese display name and shitty parents is @DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works

Clearly I also spend too much time on here lol

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

xD

Since I got summoned by a @ , gonna infodump cuz why not lol:

Funny enough now that my mom went to China for a 1-month visit, and now it's like 1 week in and I feel so sad about her absense from home...

The house feels so much more depressing... :/

I mean I guess this is a sort of "trial run" of what her eventual death would feel like...

Like... now I can call her... cuz now its just separated by an ocean, in this era, we have instantaneous communications...

someday it'll be separated by a barrier between the mortal realm and... whatever world beyond... the afterlife... spirit realm... or whatever...

I guess this is what my mom meant when she said she wanted to get married give birth to children... this same emptiness that I'm feeling...

I might never find love in life :(

Funny enough my older brother is also in China right now because mom pressured him to do marriage 🤣

(My parents are arranged marriage btw)

[–] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

oof, that's a bad hit buddy. love is one of those things where the more intention you put into looking for it the harder it is to find, other than arranged marriage. honestly if you're that worried about it though, have you considered going that route?

also crazy you're missing your mom that bad despite her abuse but I definitely get it. i was living with my dad for a while and he was moving out and I was staying and I couldn't fucking wait for him to be gone up until the moment he was leaving I started crying really bad... did not understand those emotions at all but I often don't.

hang in there ❤️

For me, one of the great things about this general style of "News Aggregation" social media is that it's community/topic focused rather than being focused on individual personalities/identities. So, in that respect, I really don't notice or pay attention to the usernames, aside from blocking/filtering out all the crumby people that make this place a much worse experience for me. Out of sight, out of mind, so I couldn't even tell you who those people are.

I'm actually a bit surprised by the responses here. I know a lot of the names mentioned here, but there are more I don't recognize than I had expected. Sometimes it does feel a little small of a group here, but seeing both the number of names I do recall aaaand all the ones I don't both help me feel this place is about 50% bigger than I had felt.

It seems there are more of you I've yet to get to know. 😄

What I'm really curious of is how many people's block lists I'm on. I'm pretty rarely controversial, but I'm sure I've had to have annoyed someone by now or bored someone to tears with endless owl superbness.

I generally don't recognize usernames and don't look at them too much

There's the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)

There's maybe a half-dozen frequent posters who I'm genuinely not sure if they're masterful trolls, some kind of AI training bots, or just really need to go touch grass (preferably on their way to a therapist's office.)

There's one dude whose username just happened to stick out to me after having a random conversation or two with him and seeing him being a generally pretty decent dude around Lemmy, I tagged him "this guy seems cool" at some point, and at some point it occurred to me that he might appreciate knowing that, so I shot him a message, and sure enough he did. I now consider him to be a pretty good friend, which is a new experience for me, I've never really been one to have online friends, I (somehow) do pretty well at making friends in meatspace and have never really felt a need to seek out an online friendship.

There's a handful of people who have said some incredibly dumb shit that I've tagged (for example one dude who I tagged "Tankie, down vote and ignore" although the last few times I've seen him pop up it seems like he may have mellowed out a bit, so good for him)

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 3 points 10 hours ago

I've the thorn guy tagged as "uses thorns" and am now shamed about my lack of creativity.

I had someone else tagged as "second guy to use thorns" but they're a lot less consistent about it.

[–] aivoton@sopuli.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago

Ah Nigel þornberry. I appreciate the dedication to thorns, but ended up writing a script which replaces thorns in their texts because they stand out too much.
