The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?

I'll start... my name's "MrShankles" and I do be commenting/posting from time to time

Names come and go. Givessomefucks is the only one that comes to mind. Mostly I just respond to the words. My client shows an upvote total. I guess I start to recognize names when someone states running that upvote total up.

Words are more important than identity. That's why I'm on anonymous social media in the first place. I might be a cantankerous asshole in one thread because mood, and the next I'm offering advice with authenticity and lived experience. Those two posts might as well be written by different people.

I don't buy into celebrity, no matter how small.

I thought I posted too much on my alt on another instance.

Glad I don't see the username here, cause at least that means I wasn't super annoying lmao

I think everyone here has already posted all the names I usually see.

There's also stamets, though I haven't seen them active in places I visit in awhile. Also a few users with custom names like Admiral Patrick or Riker Maneuver.

I worry about becoming too recognizable because I have an unconscious bias to begin self-censoring my harsher opinions once I begin to "know" people in the online space. I prioritize people's feelings over being right, and that can cause me to sugarcoat too often when someone I like says something truly tonedeaf or unintelligent.

I just wanna be able to say "The US is a fucking third world shithole" without some American acquaintance giving me the 🥺 and making me feel like a bastard man about it lolol

Way too soon to notice specific people. I suck at focusing on/distinguishing people. They all melt together into one homogeneous background mass, in online world and in real life.

It takes repeated exposure in the same environment under same conditions for me to start noticing them and even then there's no guarantee that outside said training environment i notice them.

There are a few names I informally had good vibes for. I started using tagging to keep track of folks a bit. This especially helped with the opposite because blocking someone who is grossely bad is an easy decision but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. Now I can tag. It kinda gives me this this I wanted from trust cafe where you can rate verything but instead I tag it.

I try to keep in mind the names of those that I regularly interact with, and even try to pay attention to who my regular lurkers are. While I mainly just interact with people replying to my posts, I lurk a ton myself, but there I think I'm more familiar with the names of the people I am not the biggest fan of, since I don't usually block anyone.

So far in this thread, I feel familiar with:

ada, JetpackJackson, nemo, SnotFlickerman, and I've seen a number of things from my bearboiblake recently

I went on whatever that Fediverse stat tool page is today and was able to predict most of my top ten people I comment with.

I enjoy the relatively small size of the Fediverse, and I like that I get to become familiar with so many of you.

I have started to recognize a quite a few folks here and there. Most I recognize for good posts/comments. Even a few that I don’t necessarily agree with, but they are respectful and thoughtful in their replies.

A couple I recognize for not so great reasons, but this space is pretty small so I try not to block folks unless they are outright awful. For most in this category, I just tag and avoid replying to them in the future rather than blocking.

[–] KingGimpicus@sh.itjust.works 0 points 19 hours ago

The only opinion I respect is satansmaggotycumfart

I'm somewhat new, and don't pay a lot of attention to usernames or use the user notes feature (kind of forgot it existed), so I mostly only recognize particularly distinctive usernames. There are a few I'll recognize when I see them, but the only one that's seared into my brain enough to list it offhand is a certain Satanic name.

I recognize the person that runs my instance, and I recognize some names because a good amount of time a single user on here is the only one that keeps a comm active.

And I recognize some of the alts of users that I block.

[–] JoeKrogan@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

A few names here and there.

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Recognise a fair few that have been mentioned. Oh, also that Hossenfeffer chap but he's a bit of a pillock.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

There are quite a few names I recognize from post activity or unique characters in their name and then there are some that I recognize by their comments like one user I think their name is BigMacHole, I'll read a comment and know it's them before even checking the username because of the way they write their comments.

I remember most people I interact with, good or bad.

[–] marighost@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

There's a few regular posters I enjoy seeing, especially some folks in the !birding@lemmy.world community.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

I do recognize a few names and avatars whose (nuanced and articulated) participation I appreciate... even if we don't always agree.

But to be honest, most of the time I browse without much consideration for the name of who posted or commented, and it is only after I've read a fine post/comment that I will check the user name to see if I know them and if so, what I can recall of our previous exchanges.

The people that get to really irk me they quickly end up being blocked, so I very quickly completely forget about them.
