It's funny, if I saw this in a film I'd say the CGI wasn't quite convincing but this is apparently actually what a massive helicopter in a rice field looks like.

Something about this shot specifically though, because other images of the scene don't give me that vibe.

I think it's the lighting/color grading from the sun being near its zenith, combined with the point of view. Makes it look like something that was rendered with ambient occlusion and contact shadows turned off.

Edit : also it just looks like a typical isometric game's viewing angle

[–] NOPper@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago

It's very XCOM/Xenonauts for sure.

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Isn't it rather the Ambulance for scale?

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

It still works if you remove it or even the entire bottom half

Looks like an isometric game, like Project Zomboid.

edit: isometric not isotropic lol

Desert Strike was so much fun once you ignore all the propaganda its peddling.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Was this a dos game? It looks so very familiar.

[–] Overwrite7445@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Desert Strike for the SNES, though possibly on other systems/PC too

[–] Dultas@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Definitely on Genesis

[–] VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Wow the viewing angles and lighting are spot on !

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

My first throught, looks like modded zomboid

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Probably due to the scale provided by people and emergency vehicles.

It's not even a CH-53K King Stallion that's even larger. However, the Russian Mi-26 dwarfs these things.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The rotors are so massive on the mi 26, they're drooping, crazy

[–] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pretty much any helicopter rotors droop a bit when stationary.

Yeah but I'm not sure I've seen other helicopters droop this much, not sure

I thought the Russian one came in pieces, all a bit charred.

Nailed it. Couldn't quite put my finger on the resource pack used, but you hit it friend. Well said. Maybe it's the abundance of light, or the angle?

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Personally I thought it was modded PZ at first

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Recently tried it. Its good!

Those helicopters are ancient, falling apart and are basically flying death traps. The navy has had a really hard time figuring what to replace them with as one of their main uses for the Navy is to tow a sonar array underwater to hunt submarines.

Omg they really are!

[–] grahamja@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago

Marines already started recieving the new 53Ks 4 years ago. It is completely new helicopter that just looks similar to the legacy Echo. Navy took awhile to buy the Ospreys, it is only a matter of time until they get 53Ks.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 15 points 1 week ago

Thought this was a Project Zomboid screenshot for a second.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Can't park that here.

[–] imetators@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

Desert Strike on Sega Genesis. Maybe it had DOS port too, but Sega is where I played it.

WELCOME TO THE RICE FIELDS, MOTHERFUCKER

[–] GuyIncognito@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

I hope the farmer was reimbursed. In any case, the rice ruined probably could have kept a starving person alive for another day

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I recall hearing a helicopter pilot saying that they felt better flying Marine One because it was specifically capable of water landing and that made them less nervous about where they could put the thing in an emergency.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

All aircraft are capable of water landings.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Why does it say Navy on the side if it’s USMC?

[–] Earthman_Jim@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago

Marines are under the command of the Navy, if I understand correctly.

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

Wikipedia is your friend.

The Marine Corps has been part of the United States Department of the Navy since 30 June 1834 with its sister service, the United States Navy.[12] The USMC operates installations on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world. Several of the Marines' tactical aviation squadrons, primarily Marine Fighter Attack squadrons, are embedded in Navy carrier air wings and operate from aircraft carriers.[13] These comprise the bulk of the US military's V/STOL aircraft, with 313 V-22 Ospreys, 183 F-35B Lightning IIs, and 78 AV-8B Harrier IIs as of 2025.[14]

USMC is part of the Navy.

[–] Offbus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

The US Navy is sundowning the platform, and like most assets deemed too old for the Navy, is likely now being transferred to the Marine Corp. The command gaining the asset hasn’t had the time to repaint it yet or the don’t have the paint because Marines have an issue with eating art supplies.

The post is not captioned correctly. It is a US Navy aircraft. US Marine aviation typically sticks to Iwakuni and Okinawa, this post occured near Tokyo.
