With Debian's pace they got enough characters to last at least 3,000 years easy. Thats why they're here, to be the rocks we need in our racks.

I dunno what kind of busty servers you're running, but I'm intrigued.

[–] agentTeiko@piefed.social 48 points 1 week ago

Well we haven't even run out of toy story movies yet.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 40 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Debian will never run out of Toy Story characters. There is not enough time in the universe left.

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

10^78^ years of it according to one theory.

[–] kpax@piefed.social 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I was today years old when I found out the Debian Release names were Toy Story characters. Thanks. 😁

Ian Murdock, Debian's creator, was working for Pixar when he made it

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Debian Project Leader Bruce Perens worked at Pixar in the mid-1990s, not Ian.

Thanks for the correction

Cuthbert's Law strikes again!

...Cunningham’s Law?

My fav is that Sid is named after the kid who blows up toys and puts them back together. The best name for an unstable release :-D

[–] kbal@fedia.io 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A quick grep | wc of the Wikipedia list of Toy Story characters suggests that they'll run out somewhere around the year 2120 if no new Toy Story movies are made. Perhaps Debian should start getting its movie studio department working on a new one before then, just in case.

Toy Story 5 comes out this summer....... So, yeah

Forky is from Toy Story 4, but I'm sure there's still more original Toy Story characters to use, let alone more movies to come.

[–] eighty@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Save that name for a primary fork/different project - it's too good

[–] UntimedDiffusion@piefed.zip 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Too late. Forky is already the name for Debian 14

Disney will surely milk the Toy Story franchise with many movies and shows, and with the pace of Debian's release cycle, it will be ages until the roster of characters is used up. If Toy Story characters do run out somehow, or if the Debian developers ever get bored of it I guess, they could branch out to other franchises, like Star Wars or something.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Plinkett : It was then they moved onto OTHER star wars characters, like Dexter Jettster... and Oobut Boontu.

Asking the important questions

[–] GamingChairModel@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

MacOS ran out of cats at some point. Android ran out of desserts.

Ubuntu had no problem rolling over with the letters of the alphabet, but I imagine some letters may pose issues at some point when you run out of identifiable animals that start with that letter. Although they were already going with a lot of obscure animals to begin with.

[–] tio_bira@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Android wasn't only desserts, was alphabetic order desserts.

I still remember when i start and was Cinnamon then I updated my phone to Donut, but Jellybean was the most persistent one, it stays for a while

Android ran out of desserts.

The buffet table I eat at has the same problem on occasion.

I don't think they'll have any difficulty convincing Disney to put out another installment.

[–] chelly__1@lemmychan.org 10 points 1 week ago

Who knows? Now might be a good time to speculate about it.

What about Shrek characters?

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 8 points 1 week ago

Small Soldiers.

[–] webkitten@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Name releases after Helluva Boss characters, cowards. I want Debian Moxxie and Debian Blitzo.

[–] BlindFrog@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Toy story 5 might add enough characters to subsist on for a while
