None of them are "great". But Bautista puts in the most effort with trying various roles and actually "acting", and improving every time he tries a new role. So he gets the nod for actually taking the craft seriously, even if he's not particular great at it yet.

Cena is likable enough and he plays his character well. But he doesn't stray into trying to seriously act, he just takes fun goofy roles for the most part and that's fine. But I haven't seen him challenge himself like Bautista does.

And the Rock is....just "The Rock". He has no characters. In any movie it's just "The Rock climbing a skyscraper", "The Rock get's lost in a Jumanji game", "The Rock cosplays as Buford Pusser", etc... etc...

Bautista only gets supporting roles because of his physical appearance, but I like to see him in a lead role with a decent script, because he could be great.

I disagree that Cena doesn't challenge himself. If you go back and look at The Marine, then at Peacemaker Season 2, the difference is night and day. He's done interviews about how he tried to bring his pro wrestler mentality into acting and fell flat on his face. When he came back with roles like the boyfriend in Trainwreck and the dad in Blockers, you can tell he slowed down and started having fun with it. From there, I'd argue he turned himself into a decent actor.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

That's true. But Blockers and Trainwreck are a part of what I'm describing. He's content to mostly stick to the same basic character; a jovial everyman, basically. I don't see him ever wanting to tackle the stage on Broadway or play Macbeth, or anything for "serious" actors. He's just happy to be doing his thing. And hey, that's fine and dandy. More power to him.

I see Bautista as someone who (Ironically I wasn't a fan of at all in GotG) legitimately wants to climb that acting ladder. I don't think he'll succeed...let's be clear. He won't be winning any oscars any time soon. But I respect the effort to stretch himself with things like Bladerunner 2049, Dune, Knock at the Cabin, See, etc... which are all drastically different characters.

Yeah Cena has grown in leaps and bounds as an actor. Even the growth in his skill from The Suicide Squad to season 2 of Peacemaker is really visible, and that’s because of the work he’s put in to keep up with some of the other actors. He’s great case study in someone with some natural talent who’s pushing themselves to become good. But yeah I’m bit biased as he’s the only guy I could see playing Carrot in a Discworld Guards movie and I really want that.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I could see that but he’s short and stocky. After watching Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Peter Claffey’s Dunk would be a great Carrot, he’s got the slouch and gentle giant demeanor dialed in.

he also is pretty nasty person to deal with contract wise, he doesnt like not being the center of attention, and he must be the one witht he most action scenes.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

baustista is an actor, THE rock has always been thirsty for the attention, he always wanted to be the Movie star, terrible actor and he is pretty much behind the scenes 'ellen degeneres', cena is in between bautista and the rock,

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Johnson doesn't act. He plays the same character in everything he does, which is himself.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 64 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Bautista was excellent in Blade Runner 2049.

[–] RamenJunkie@midwest.social 68 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The order is definitely

1 - Bautista 2 - Cena 3 - Andre the Giant

[–] JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago

"Anybody want a peanut?"

~ Andre the Giant

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

4 - Rowdy Roddy Piper 5 - Jesse Ventura

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

And in Dune. Villeneuve hangs on to good actors.

[–] ZebulonP@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Shame he was hardly in it. Theres a set of short prequel videos. One of them has a backstory for his character.

[–] braxy29@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

i loved him in that, and i was so disappointed about his performance in dune - i think he was miscast. would have switched him and Brolin for a better fit.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

He was a perfect Rabba. You're not supposed to like him.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Rabban was described as a muscle headed idiot so I get the direction they went, though it really was a waste of Bautista's obvious acting chops.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

He's great at playing muscle headed idiots though

[–] Kennystillalive@feddit.org 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Out of these 3 Bautista by far.

[–] portuga@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Best at acting? Who cares? He’s my choice as well

...and I smell only what one of them is cooking.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure the lyrics are, you're welcome.

He'd absolutely hate to hear this but I think an obviously aged Maui adds a lot more to the character than the animated version had.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Bautista is good in many things, the very underrated movie, Bushwick.

Hotel Artemis was also interesting, though he is playing a similar character in both he is also actually trying to be an actor and increase his range.

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bautista by a country mile, for Blade Runner (his webisode mainly) alone.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seconded. Bautista did dumb-funny well in Guardians, serious in 2049, and just plain old acting in something like Glass Onion. He does a lot better than some top billed actors IMO, but then he has some mediocre characters too. Win some, lose some.

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Everyone’s got bills to pay.

Personally I quite liked Stuber

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Wrestlers are already actors, it's why they do so well when they change careers.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did you know the Rock was in Star Trek?

He plays an alien with some face prosthetic…who is a professional wrestler.

[–] cm0002@toast.ooo 3 points 1 day ago

I did because VOY is my fav lol, season 6 episode 15 where 7 and Tuvok get kidnapped and forced to compete in combat matches to the death (well Tuvok doesn't because he was critically injured)

Iirc it was his first acting gig before his actual "breakthrough" acting gig

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 10 points 2 days ago

I watched The Smashing Machine because I heard they made the Rock actually act in it.

They didn't, they just stuck a wig on him.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jesse Ventura has entered the chat and he's carrying a steel chair!

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

It's more likely an advertising department somewhere that has all 3 as clients.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Not Cock johnson.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The bing chiling guy sucks at acting too tho

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

He's improved a good bit. Peacemaker is a decent show. I mean, his character is not too challenging for him, but he's not failing at the acting part.
