I just bought a little beef jerky. Haven’t had any in quite a while. It was supposed to be spicy. What I got was something sweet, rubbery and gummy, with barely a hint of heat. (In the US) W.t.f.

When I was a kid, jerky was dry AF, thin, salty, tooth-rippingly tough sometimes, never sweet unless you specifically got a teryaki flavor or something. If you wanted spicy, it was covered in pepper and your mouth would be on fire after just a couple pieces. It was awesome.

Now it’s sugary and chewy. Why people gotta put sugar on everything? Can’t find that dry, thin, peppery stuff anywhere.

What food of yours has disappeared or been wrecked in order to appeal to more people?

I’d go with junk food generically. While some of it has to do with changing tastes as I get older, most junk food has gotten so bad that it’s not even tempting. Now ice cream is trying to join that mess, but there are still a few brands worth enjoying.

On the other hand, Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups are truly amazing, in a way Reese’s could never even dream

We prefer the milk chocolate cups, but they’re both good. I think TJ’s has changed the filling formula a little sometime in the last few years. The filling used to be a little denser and faintly crunchy if I remember right. Now it’s very smooth. I liked the previous filling better.

Now THAT'S disgusting

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

Ben & Jerry's Kahlua flavored ice cream. That was the absolute best!

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

I miss the frosted vanilla creme pop tarts. They were always my favorite ones. I’d toast them and put butter on them and it was just magnificent. Then they discontinued them, brought them back a few years later, and discontinued them again. I’d love to have those back.

And no, that cookies n cream abomination is not the same.

You'll be happy to know that good old fashioned delicious tooth buster beef jerky is still widely available.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Haven’t found it. Guess I haven’t visited the right truck stop convenience store.

[–] CallMeAl@piefed.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You can indeed find it at finer truck stops and old conveniences stores in the middle of no where. These days I just order by mail. This might be what you seek https://msmeats.com/pages/the-original-1945-cowboy-jerky-dry-tough-and-proudly-old-school

Even that appears to have a higher moisture content than what I recall. It does look good, though.

This is closer: https://www.oldworldjerky.com/our-jerky/

Except they say “crispy”. The stuff I recall could be crispy, but it was also more fibrous and could be chewy. Just not very uniform the way these brands strive to be.

I'm personally a huge fan of Werner, I order from them every month. I've got some of their jerky chew in my lip right now. They also sell some very interesting candies, like Chamoy gummy bears/worms/rings and some amazing salt water taffy. The Cucharitas (Mexican tamarind based candy) are absolutely delicious. They're a small-ish family owned business, operating in Oregon since 1994. Takes about a week for shipping, but that's not too bad.

If you're looking for something really dry, People's Choice Beef Jerky is the driest jerky I've ever had. Just make sure to order the "Old Fashioned" and not the "Classic" if you want the super dry stuff. Their Carne Seca is pretty good too, I like the limon con chile flavor. They also try out new flavors/products all the time, if you like variety. Right now, their Test Kitchen is selling a Nashville Hot flavor, and that stuff is damn good. They had a really nice Gochujang flavor, but it's been sold out for weeks.

Basically all of them at this point

[–] Ashtear@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Old El Paso taco seasoning. I think they changed it a long time ago. I'm sure it was cost considerations, and not broader appeal.

I've tried making my own but I can never get it quite right.

[–] Obituarykidney@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I made tacos with this one the other day and it was pretty damn close. Fiance was happy with them too and we eat a lot of old el paso tacos.

Also, highly recommend these recipes in general. A lot of them have made their way into my regular rotation. The lasagna is delicious.

Polenta that is not liquid or soup like. I remember it being thick, almost crumbly but I never can get the consistency from my childhood.

[–] unknown@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago

Try baking it.

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 1 points 6 days ago

There was one specific flavour of crisps made by a local company that I used to think were awesome as a kid. They made all kinds, but those were the best.

I am not sure whether I got older or whether they changed the recipe, but the last time I tried them they were not the same.

There's also one specific kind of cake that a local supermarket used to sell that was literally the best cake ever. And of course they cancelled it because they "weren't selling enough". The staff were very surprised at the number of people who asked for it after it went away. But then, they weren't the ones who made the decision to cancel it.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

when I was a kid I enjoyed sneeble's pocket tarts. they had fun flavors like tweegy, slemo, and ptolemy.

I wish you could still find them, but for one reason or another they just vanished overnight.

Snelgrove’s burnt almond fudge ice cream. It was a revelation, and now it’s gone forever.

When I was a kid, I liked McDonald's pizza happy meals (I still remember the song from the advertisements). I doubt middle-aged-adult me would like it, but I weirdly want to try it again. I'm sure there's other stuff from the '80s and '90s, but I can't immediately think of it.

[–] Watermark710@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The only place in the USA where you can still get a McPizza is the "Epic McD's" in Orlando Florida.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 1 points 6 days ago

I thought there was one in Ontario as well, but that might have ended. I have no idea if they still would use the same recipe. Still, I would have to go to the US and further to Florida and I'd rather not do that.

Hamburger helper. I'm not sure if it was my taste buds as a kid VS adult, but I hadn't had it in years and wanted to share the experience with my kids. It was so bad. It tasted like stale powders and cardboard. I know it wasn't the height of cuisine but at least it was edible. This wasn't.

Check out Hard Times OP, best jerky around! Super thin, not pressed but sliced, very dry. Just so damn good!

That looks pretty good.

Mountain Dew Distortion. It was one of the ones you could vote on. It was basically the same recipe but with lime being the dominant flavor over lemon. A mild change, but I much preferred it over the original.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

When/where was this available? I don’t recall seeing it.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

This would have been around 2010.
