Millions of international travelers are increasingly choosing to avoid the United States.

The United States had roughly 4 million fewer international visitors in 2025 than the year before, marking a 5.5 percent decline in overseas tourism, according to CNN. Foreign visitor spending also fell by more than $8 billion.

Aside from the collapse in travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, it represents the sharpest annual drop in international tourism in roughly 20 years.

Nobody wants to end up in an ICE concentration camp for not looking white American enough or speaking with a foreign accent.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago

These stories are shared worldwide.

Two teen German girls strip searched (that's American for sexually assaulted).

They don't want to end up in a choke hold for nine minutes or with speed holes in the head.

Good. We don't deserve your money right now, and you don't deserve our bullshit.

I hope Canada never forgets that America openly voted for, and celebrated this. I hope we as a nation never trust America ever again.

We should never trust your government, and we should never trust your population to ever do the right thing ever again. I hope this stain lingers on America forever.

It will, just not in our texts. Last president of the empire.

I don't know if I would have described it as a boycott. In the end that may be true, but more specifically it's a pragmatic decision not to risk your life and freedom. I mean, would you say that people are boycotting travel to Iran or Democratic Republic of the Congo at the moment? That's just not quite the right verb.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

That's why I boycott Sony. It's nuts to me that they're still in business after deliberately adding malware to their products.

Anyone still visiting the USA for any reason other than a life-threatening situation is an active and knowing supporter of fascism, and deserves whatever atrocities occur to them whilst there.

Zero sympathies.

Canada and mexico strangely up something like 10%

Trump is the best thing to happen to the CDN economy in 50 years. Tourism way up, and we are severing from US industry irreversibly.

He's the GOAT at own-goals, no wonder FIFA gave him an award.

Oh, you mean tourists coming to Canada and Mexico, not tourists coming from those places to the US. Because Canadians have significantly reduced visits to their southern neighbour (one estimate is that they are down 42%).

Just hope the FIFA World Cup collapses in shameful empty stadiums... not just because of the orange pedophile but also because FIFA is corrupt to the core

I know of people desperately selling tickets at cost (which is absurdly expensive) and have not found a single bite in weeks so I very much doubt they are selling as FIFA likes to pretend.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ive heard they trying to sell them on the subreddits to related to to fifa tickets. they were mostly laughed at and removed posts.

Empty in the US. Packed in Canada and Mexico!

I live in an area with a huge number of Canadian snowbirds in a normal year. This year there are almost none.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

going to SE asia, japan, or mexico, s america instead. the fact that MSMs arnt reporting all the red states not having tourist is pretty telling how bad it is.

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 35 points 2 days ago (2 children)

5.5% decline. Those are fucking rookie numbers, bump that shit up to 80%.

[–] Womble@piefed.world 11 points 1 day ago

Its on top of a 14% decline the previous year. so thats 1 out of every 5 people who were travelling to the US for any reason in 2024 (including business and family visits which realistically are never going to be cancelled) not going to the US in 2026.

Thats a huge drop.

[–] Cybersec@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah my thoughts too, only 5.5%?! wtf world have you not seen the news, run away!

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

the news, MSMs arnt reporting it thats why, likely if people remain ignorant and its not being reported, it must not be bad to them.

[–] Klear@piefed.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Not reporting what exactly? USA being a shithole is constantly on the news.

5.5 percent decline

People who want to visit that cancer country have no political awareness hence these neglectable numbers.
Like the vulgar crowd going to the tourist trap that is Dubai know nothing about what an awful backward and evil shithole the emiRats are.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (3 children)

4 million fewer international visitors ....... Foreign visitor spending also fell by more than $8 billion.

That's $2000 per tourist. Who is willing to pay $2000 for the chance to meet ICE?

[–] GenosseFlosse@feddit.org 17 points 2 days ago (4 children)

A bit shocked that 94.5% are still visiting?

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

The numbers are comparing 24 to 25 and I’m guessing that a lot of international travel is planned more than a few months in advance. Really big trips may be planned a year in advance. My memory is fuzzy but I don’t think we got to the “oh, shit! They’re locking up random white middle class tourists from the EU, maybe I’ll just take the loss on that non-refundable airbnb deposit“ until maybe last fall?

But you’re right that the numbers are still way too damn high. As a USian I have a lot of be ashamed of and yeah, we should be rioting in the streets but people in real countries shouldn’t get too smug if they can’t even give up Disney World, Jim Beam and Twitter.

For what it's worth, places have had to resort to some crazy deals. I've heard of places in Vegas offering to take Canadians' dollars at par. The exchange rate right now is 1.38 CAD to 1 USD, so that's a pretty absurd discount.

I value my soul and/freedom, so not for me but cheap bastard that I am, I was kinda tempted.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I'll never forget that glorious period when $1USD = $1CAD = €1. If the USA wasn't being such a jerk, we could've unified to one world currency then and there.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve heard of places in Vegas offering to take Canadians’ dollars at par.

Still doesn't change that Vegas is unaffordable, even in US$.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

To each their own. It's not my idea of fun but it's a fairly common bachelor party, crazy weekend etc.

It's a party vacation and a fairly common destination, not just for the uber wealthy. Plenty of middle class folks head there.

Don't underestimate how much the general population just does not give a fuck about anything but themselves. They wanted that Vegas trip and are either blissfully unaware of current events or they're aware and just don't care, maybe a part of them even agrees with it all..

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

vegas has thier own problems that occurred way before trump returned to the WH. VEGAS is just circling the drain to the abyss. its interesting how conservatives from LA area moved there thinking just because of no income tax, means they keep more money. but arnt aware the state doesnt really have much of a good health, or education system.

We should also be boycotting USA until they honour their treaties with the tribes.
