News and information from Europe πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

I don't think there is anything quiet about it. This has been a long time coming and frankly as an American I don't know why it was not done sooner.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 9 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (2 children)

How do you quiet quit a country that you don't live in? I'm not planning to travel to the United States anytime soon but I'm worried that they will not understand that I'm boycotting them and will think I'm simply not going.

Do I need to write a letter or something?

[–] belathus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago

Canada hasn't been quiet about avoiding american brands. Like, entire sections of empty shelves in liquor stores that used to carry american brands and the like. But you can totally do that quietly, if you prefer the quiet approach.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 5 points 8 hours ago

That's what quiet quitting is. You quit without making a big deal out of it.

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

And then there is the UK signing up for Star Shield... Ugh

Lemmy commentor SLAMS journalists for writing ever shittier headlines

Lemmy commentators TAKE DOWN a random Twitter account

Clickbaity headlines ANNIHILATE Lemmy commentator 's last brain cell

Quiet quitting? I don’t think this is the right term at all. IMO Europeans, and tourists from any other country for that matter, have made it quite clear that there are a lot fewer of them that want to visit the US or buy products associated with the US. I don’t think they’re being quiet about it at all.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 7 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Just gonna leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU

One of the few reasons I still use Reddit.

[–] EatingOnions@lemmy.world 8 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Better invite them here, what's the point of switching from US stuff by doing it on US platform despite having alternative?

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

"Inviting" then here is not very effective when the majority just can't be bothered to.

There are already plenty of communities by that name. Shamefully none of them are active.

[–] EatingOnions@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

I'm not asking them to create this community, I'm asking to join here, increase user count and make this place more alive. What's the point of this silly movement if they stay there? That's totally counterproductive

[–] Mucki@feddit.org 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Reddit can go suck a duck. I would not even passively read reddit.

Thank you for your effort

I'M QUITTING AS LOUD AS I CAN.

[–] Boingboing_r@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I'M WITH THIS GUY. EVEN THE BAR I WORK EXTRA AT HAD TO STOP STOCKING JACK DANIELS CAUSE IT JUST WONT SELΓ– ANYMORE. ANECDOTAL COMMENT IS ANECDOTAL.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Are you sure it's just not because Jack Daniels is rubbish? I used to drink it a lot when I was an teenager but that's because I couldn't afford anything else and I didn't know any better.

[–] Boingboing_r@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Could be. It is shite. But one of the bartenders did ask when did we last sell Jack or take up a new bottle? And its just untouched to the point where we removing it from shelves.

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago

I always thought the fact that it was rubbish was half the point? It's not for quietly enjoying - it's for mixing with coke and rock music and getting shitfaced.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

Feeling this at my company.

The amount of time I have spent working with European customers has dropped a lot. They are doing whatever they can to buy European instead.

Crazy compared to how freely things worked out years ago. Early 2000s I worked at a company basically doing stuff with all sorts of folks from USA to Europe to Russia to China.

This is some serious Savonarola's shit.

(I looked up this name and I don't think I'm in community with enough Catholics to understand what this means)

Ah, i do love me some silly horizontal progressbar that steals me limited reading space.
