The other day someone asked what kind of music I listen to and I said frank schauthiggua, they asked what genre and I said mostly cerebral catwave. It seemed like he took it seriously or he was really good at pretending to know what that is. I at least think I made those up. His reaction made me question...

I have almost no idea what any of the more specific genre tags I see on a lot of songs even mean. Has anyone already made something like a list of genres with some examples?

Edit: Thanks everyone, I'll check those on my next break or maybe when I get home if they get on my case about headphones at work

This is not recently updated, but it has a go at mapping the relationships and progression of music genres over time(click a name for specific detail):

* There are more, find them by doing a websearch 'music genre map'

cerebral catwave

That really sounds like it could plausibly be some niche internet microgenre of music even if you pulled it out of your butt, so maybe they just rolled with it?

(If it isn't one yet, someone will probably make it one now that you've posted this... πŸ™ƒοΈ)

If I encountered someone I thought was bullshitting me about some Gen alpha Internet micro genre, I'd probably just roll with it too while admiring the improv.

I mean, if you want to retroactively classify the PornHub jingle as "cerebral catwave", I'm not gonna stop you... πŸ€”οΈ

RIP everynoise. The creator worked at Spotify doing cool algorithm stuff, but when AI came about Spotify sacked em and denied the API connections that fed the site

Not guides, but try the 4chan music charts, like this one: https://4chanmusic.miraheze.org/wiki/File:Mucore2.jpg or https://4chanmusic.miraheze.org/wiki/Essential_Charts

They might be the trolls of the internet, but they have good taste.

Damn. Those lists are neither fake nor gay. What’s happening?

I wasn't expecting much but you're right. It's a good selection.

i have found the genre/subgenre descriptions on RateYourMusic quite handy, when clicking through there is usually a bunch of example albums and/or curated lists, it's been really helpful for when i just start dipping my toes into something but don't know much about it.
