I can't begin to count the number of times I'm glad I have this place as a respite from how godawful most of the western English-speaking internet culture and moderation is.

On the whole, you try to enforce basic ideological lines people shouldn't mess with and you don't treat politics like dirt to sweep under the rug. Those two alone already make it stand out from a lot of spaces on the internet. And you aren't reactionary or liberal about it, which together with the other two, really makes it stand out.

This may sound exaggerative since it's "just an internet forum", but I want to say it's like a little preview of what life could be like if I lived under an AES state. A world where the system itself says no to the worst tendencies and supports betterment in theory and practice of ideology explicitly. Like it's a night and day difference in feel when you are a lone person trying to draw attention to a problem vs. when the system and community are on your side.

At the same time i find this to be a very open place that doesn't stifle discussion in that obnoxious way that liberal/ultra-leftist spaces with purity fetishes do, which is very good for encouraging newcomers to ask questions and learn without feeling like they are in a sectarian echo-chamber. So long as there is no apologia for fascism, imperialism or genocide of course...

Have a great week, everyone! One thing I've found handy is limiting social media use to specific times and places, helps me not be so phone addicted. For me, it's been very nice!

As always, communism will win.

In an act of pettiness I decided to appeal my Reddit ban and call the admins stupid for allowing Nazism and... it worked lmao. They unbanned me. But now I feel stupid for appealing a fucking Reddit ban.

I don't understand Reddit's filters. I have reported actual Nazism and it does not get banned but I make a sarcastic comment and I get banned for 7 days immediately.

[–] pyromaiden@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 month ago

It took a month of mass reporting to take down a Steam forum post openly calling for a Second Holocaust to "finish the job" from some Nazi prick crashing out because some company was being scummy as usual while I got forum banned within the hour for telling the guy to follow his leader.

Telling one person to kill themselves? Steam mods say that's completely unacceptable no matter the circumstances.

Calling for mass genocide on a global scale? Steam mods think that's okay unless you literally harass them into doing their job.

I don't care that I got a ban for it; I accepted that as a fair consequence for telling a fascist scumbag what he deserves to be told. It was the fact they didn't do anything about the guy calling for killing all Jews everywhere until multiple people bullied them into taking care of it that left me livid. The moderation of nearly every major website online is almost exclusively dominated by the Far Right and their collaborators. Rules only apply to Leftists and the marginalized.

It's so baffling how these same losers think mods persecute them when mods consistently let them get away with saying truly vile shit. I just recently got harassed on the Gothic Remake forums for asking the basic question of whether or not you could choose your character's gender; immediately assailed by a flurry of transphobic and misogynistic abuse that went on for several pages over a span of two days before mods finally closed to thread for being "unproductive". Nobody got banned. Absolutely hideous behavior. The worst part is one of the first response was from a moderator answering my question honestly - that same moderator was the one who locked the thread! They were there the entire fucking time, saw everything, and did nothing!

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with Steam Forums. That place is like a mini 4chan sometimes.

[–] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 month ago

I'd bet they're taking cues from youtube moderation: opaque algorithms rife with confusing rulesets and false positives.

It would make sense if they started ramping that up after the fallout from the mod protest relating to API changes, as a way to moderate more with less people.

Not to say it is unbiased at all. I'm sure it's biased toward imperialist politics to one degree or another.

A 15 year old in The Netherlands killed their parents. Tragic situation, of course. Only now people from their school talk about them struggling with identity, claiming they wanted to switch genders and later identifying as a dog.

So now this tragic situation becomes a right wing thing to demonize Trans people (even though there is no confirmation of this person actually being trans)

If Iran end up playing the US this world cup I will watch it even if it is at 4 am. And if they win I will drive through my street honking like a mad man.

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

if usa faces Iran they will use every bit of fuckery to screw them over before the game even starts.

Went to an Irish pub yesterday to watch the Dutch game versus Japan. Lots of Dutch migrants in Belgium were there as well as lots of Belgian people. There is this really one sided rivalry of Belgian people against Dutch people so they were cheering for Japan lol. No Dutch person attending seemed to care (neither did my friend and I) except for one group of pretty drunk Dutch people who looked like they just attended high school drama class. They kept shouting HOLLAND HOLLAND and standing up and waving at people to do the same. The rest of the Dutch people attending just awkwardly ignored them. They also started chatting shit to the Belgian people and I really hoped they would get their ass kicked at one point. Proper NPC behavior.

Cultural exchanges are fun.

Dutch politicians like to ragebait about how left wing activists are a danger but meanwhile we have fascists militias attacking refugee centers. Today a bomb was found in one. But I am the danger here of course.

https://lemmygrad.ml/post/11947624 once you’ve read an article about the usa fomenting ultranationalism/fascism among the ukrainian population you’ll never stop wanting to beat everyone who unthinkingly says slava ukraini to death with your bare hands or whatever bourdain said

[–] 6kb_@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 month ago

i finally successfully made a reddit account for hobbies and tried to get reaccustomed to an onslaught of political illiteracy from the algorithm (and sparsely in spaces i otherwise enjoy) and good lord, i keep forgetting to most there is no neo nazi problem in ukraine, i keep forgetting to most stalin is a black demon and that the ussr was an evil regime

I'm busting a gut laughing at this recreation of the Charlie Kirk shooting in Pokemon Showdown. It's so packed with details that you gotta pause every second to notice everything. I just about died when Erika Kirk used Water Spout lmfao this is a generational shitpost

We had a bus manufacturing company here in Belgium that was making Belgian busses for our public transport but also for other countries. The company went bankrupt and the government did not want to step in. Hundreds of people lost their highly specialized jobs. A lot of them found their way to other jobs. The bus company is gone.

The ground it was on was sold to a Turkish company who will now start building... busses. On the same site. The government could have stepped in and keep a highly specialized industry but no. And now the place will do the exact same thing. All the workers are gone though so good luck finding employees.

Capitalism is the greatest and most efficient system there is.

Wore my Celtic FC shirt today and when outside some older guy started talking in English about our Scottish atmosphere at the WC and how it was amazing. I asked him in English if he was Scottish and he said no and then I understood he must've thought I was Scottish lmao. I played along and just had a chat in English trying to do my best Scottish accent. People are so funny towards foreigners.

Serious question: is it even worth posting about the "Chinese caste system" psyop here? It has persisted for days now, but people actually read history, so it seems unnecessary. (?)

[–] SuperstarAmelia@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I "like" how, from what i can tell, the memo linked here basically explicitly says Blair and Bush lied about Iraq and knew it from the outset, and we're willing to do a false flag attack to attack Iraq.

Ignoring everything else, all of capitalism problems, all of the other problems with Afghanistan and both Bush and Blair, this is just bad by Bourgeois law standards. Like, it'd be extraordinary, but blair might technically be able to be prosecuted for misconduct in public office. Idk, I feel like if a pm did that [they wouldnt. Also idk how the crown prosecution service works im that regard] he might be the most popular prime minister in decades. At the very least both probably could have been impeached/held in contempt [for their respective systems]. And before anyone says anything, yes i know Bourgeois laws are a sham and such. My point is kinda just a disbelief that there's basically just a confession sitting in classified files somewhere in the UK

We have a very large Jewish community in our city. Yesterday I sat in a park in their neighborhood and found myself sitting besides some Israeli jews visiting family I guess. The way they were talking about Israel as if they were going back to some lush and cozy country was absolutely shocking. Like, you are actively commiting a genocide man.

I hope my Celtic jersey at least made them somewhat uncomfortable.

I decided to finally make another Feddit account so that I could share some of my findings with the userbase there. I make one topic with three DOI(!) links and their system shadowbans me. It’s been five days and they haven’t unbanned me even though so far I have appealed the shadowban thrice… what a horribly designed system. Maybe this was a sign from Providence that I should not have bothered making another account.

it has finally finally hit for me that the median politics/quality of discussion and critical thinking on every mainstream social media are so so atrocious that there's basically no use in any situation for me to use it if i still want normal heart functions. even in the realm of hobbies or shows i like everyone's just so infuriating... never use reddit

The US doing flyovers with helicopters during their match at the WC last night is so funny considering they just got their ass kicked in Iran.

What's even funnier (or sad) is people commenting how Seattle wasn't worthy of jets instead. Like, my guys it is a sporting event why are there military vehicles showing off anyway? If the DPRK did that the media would have a field day with how pathetic it is.

Need to lock in for the next 10 or so days of 30+ degree weather. Temperatures like this were a rare occurrence when I was young but the last few years have changed that. Weeks ago we had several really hot days too and we are now back at it again for almost two weeks.

There are hotter places, I know, but my point is that this weather is not normal for where I live. Everything here is build with a colder climate in mind so a lot of homes trap heat inside. Ground water levels are facing more and more threats.

Every time a heat wave like this comes up, I think about packing everything and moving to like Sweden or Norway because it's not going to be better in the foreseeable future.

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'd never move to Sweden or Norway. My climate change escape fantasy is buying a small farm in Russia and just planting some potatoes and beets, raise a few pigs and some chickens, make a deal with the neighbor for some milk every now and then (because even in my escapist fantasies i can't afford a whole cow)...

Then i remember i have no skills and no capital to do any of that... :(

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 month ago

Apparently much warmer days result in lots of thunderstorms over here. Haven't seen as much thunder as the last two weeks. Nearly every night it's a thunderstorm. Yesterday was the heaviest ever recorded. Felt like a constant barrage of lightning. At least some cool aspect of climate change because it was beautiful.
