"He won't go willingly"

Both his niece and his ghostwriter predicted it about 10 years ago. MAGA proved them right before, and they will certainly try again. And again. In every conceivable way. They've been filling positions from their ranks for years. They're so deep in the shit, they have everything to lose and therefore nothing to lose.

don’t want my thoughts and comments to be an income stream for a for-profit organization

(...)

The modern social media platform is not designed to foster positive interactions, but rather to maximize shareholder value.

This is so much more important than whatever elitism OOP implies.

I'm also not 40 btw.

It seems to me that what’s happened in recent years is individual companies that offer some sort of information service have been centralizing and gatekeeping

I thought that's what you meant but your statement that the fediverse "trying to layer some order over a decentralized physical infrastructure" is totally removed from that.

BTW I'm not cynical about AI, I'm against it. There's a difference.
Were Luddites "cynical" about mechanical weaving? I don't think so, but the people who called them Luddites in the first place certainly were.

It is already being done as much as we politically dare, as it’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid further escalation of the war.

Just like you made a relativized statement, so did I, yet you cut that part off.

I think politics could dare a lot more without endangering us any more than we already are. Without escalating any further.

Just think of the internet.

Shall we just watch as hybrid warfare spreads further and further? I believe the real danger and actual damage from that is much higher than from the Kremlins nuclear posturing.

We do seem to agree on most points though.

fediverse is it’s trying to layer some order over a decentralized physical infrastructure.

I'm not sure I follow you. The Fediverse is about social networking which is not all, not even most of the internet.

And the internet itself is a layer of order over its decentralised physical infrastructure.

You really really hate the new 3310. To the point that you're inventing adversaries where there are none.

I was going for the complicity. That's a big (geographically) problem.

TBH I forgot that I had this discussion elsewhere and I'm about 99% sure that these phones simply become unusable when 2G is shut down, which is why some countries shut down 3G but not 2G. But I don't remember or understand the technical stuff behind it.

There's also somehing about these specs that we just call 2G or 3G etc., in reality it's much more complex.

Yes, the internet is decentralised in every way, not only its infrastructure. Even unorganised. If that's your big discovery, I respect that. But...

the library was the main source of human knowledge, and it was very organized through the Dewey Decimal System

Not all of humanity uses the DD system.

Today, even the search engines are failing us, and we are turning to AI.

This simply isn't true, and everything you write after that. It's an insult to actual librarians.
There is no "Artifical Intelligence".

Indexing the internet is a big job. We had data centers even before A-not-I. And people were complaining about how much energy they use. Had we known then how much worse this is going to get very soon....

Artificial Unintelligence does not do that job better btw. It doesn't do the indexing at all. It just wastes energy. And, as another commenter pointed out, it actively makes the situation you describe worse.

They've been ramping this shit up ever since '22.*

Worse: when they do this to kids they stole from Ukraine.

I don't think the rest of the world will ever - or even should - meddle in a country's affairs to the point of destroying their government, but I think it's high time to ostracize and isolate Russia in every way possible.

Even China doesn't do this shit to their people. Not so brazenly at least.

Also, the next time someone says "Russians brought this on themselves because they voted for the wrong guy", show them this. Because, as I said, this has been going on for a long time, a lot longer than '22. They are adults now. Fully indoctrinated and kept from any sort of real information.

* this phrasing is not to be misunderstood: they already did it long before that. It's been a steady development ever since Putin came to power.

Tax is not a punishment.

Are you replying to the wrong person? I specifically pointed out that they were thinking about something else.

Among the 15 most imitated media brands were eight French outlets, including FRANCE 24, which saw its brand coopted by fake news stories 34 times over 12 months.

The brazenness. I honestly wouldn't oppose cutting the Russian internet out from the rest of the world - something Putin himself wanted to do before he realized how much he can hurt "The West" through it.

Of course it could never be 100%. If it's additionally made illegal for VPNs to serve Russian IPs there's still the option of simply buying people's services abroad, but it would still help a lot, esp. since payment happens through the internet as well.

There are multiple objectives for Moscow’s information war

And the one that binds them all: fuck your enemy up, and not just militarily.

It's called hybrid warfare for a reason.

And once again - this is turning into a pet peeve of mine - the headline is misleading. The use of present tense in this case. It evokes an immediate reaction: this is developing right now! But how could they know if it's such a fresh thing? Well, turns out it isn't. The article itself is more honest, uses past tense:

The Russian disinformation operations that emerged at the start of the war in Ukraine have ramped up in the past year

Not saying this isn't newsworthy.
