Yet another reason to switch to Firefox, or even better, a hardened fork like LibreWolf !librewolf@lemmy.ml
Ok so the initial post was about China, then some commenter compared it to the US, but now talking about China is somehow "whataboutism". Lemmy.ml people really have their own kind of logic.
You can't compare that to China by any means. I know that American democracy is incredibly flawed (e.g. 2-party system, electoral college, etc.), but China is a straight-up dictatorship, and downplaying it doesn't fix any of the issues that exist in the US.
But the US is not an authoritarian shithole (it's not a perfect democracy either, but it can't be compared to the Chinese dictatorship in any way), which develops its domestic industries on industrial espionage and stolen intellectual property. Unlike... China. The TSA doesn't get orders from the US government to steal trade secrets and other critical information from business people, in order to boost US industries.
I tried using Jerboa and found it to be incredibly buggy and poorly designed. Not sure what's going on there, considering that it's the official mobile app made by the Lemmy devs
That's what you get for using a proprietary Lemmy app. Switch to Thunder, it doesn't have ads, it's open source and in my opinion has the best UI out of all Lemmy apps. Also support the development and join their community: !thunder_app@lemmy.world
That kinda reminds me of my job, except that we build the unserviceable hardware and install Windows, as well as our proprietary software. Then we charge our customers shitloads of money for technical support. We're a government contractor btw
It's actually a pretty nice company (from an employee standpoint), we use a lot of Linux internally, as well as other FOSS software. But porting our products to Linux is hopeless, we have decades of C++ code that either relies on Windows APIs directly, or on our custom libraries that rely on Windows-specific stuff.
several of our suppliers have been pressured to offer Linux support
We just got our first oscilloscope with Red Hat preinstalled.
This is so cool. Really great to hear. I wish more companies and other institutions would do this. They have to realize that using Microsoft software won't benefit them in the long term, and actually start pressuring hardware vendors into pre-installing Linux.
It's not the "AI nightmare", it's a nightmare of capitalism, proprietary software and user-hostile behavior by a greedy, profit-extracting Big Tech corporation.
Can't the EU 'suspend' Hungary's membership until Orban the dictator is removed from office?
The enshittification continues, but it doesn't affect me at all. Piracy is the way to go nowadays that all streaming services suck. !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com
