Money not only isn't real, it cannot be real beyond someone's imagination. Sure, it can be shared into other "people's" imagination. You can be all talismanic and ink or carve your delusion upon any fucking thing, even skin, but it's not actually real, the way whatever you stamped actually is.
To say they "bought" is close to accurate. "Possessed" might give you a cognitive perspective of what they actually meant in those churches way back when you thought they were all Coup Coup stealing tape measure relabeling Golem puppeteering...
