While their candidate is receiving death threats?

If the photo wasn't genuine, you'd expect that to be the first thing the Greens would say in response, surely?

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, it had ballooned to more than double their initial estimate, quite frankly, I don't trust Labour's numbers on any of this.

It's not explicitly said in the article, but the ships will be sister ships, from my understanding, and will be replacing the entire fleet.

Also, the original vessels were $550 mil for the pair, no way is the cancellation cost more than that.

You can comment on both the album and an individual photo on Facebook though.

And the fact it was their child doesn't make this less weird.

I think the major cost saving is having smaller ships means less port side infrastructure, so even if we do upgrade the port to modern standards, it will still be cheaper.

My understanding is we're buying two ships, which will be identical.

Also, forty rail cars is a lot, each one is equivalent to a fully loaded truck at least.

Screenshots are forever.

Never mind deleted, why would you ever post it in the first place?

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemmy.nz 5 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

That's even weirder than I thought it would be.

One person's trash policy is not another's treasure, sometimes it's simply a failure.

The issue with that suggestion is, it takes much less time to throw out what the last government was doing than to actually do something yourself.

The best way to stop "rip and replace" is to stop fucking up, in my view. The ferry project is a classic example, set to be over a billion dollars over budget, and the boats are only 550 mil each, and the boats were absolute monsters, far bigger than we needed.

Three waters is another example, if Labour had dropped the co-governance aspect, the project would likely have gone ahead without too much controversy, but they pushed ahead with a wildly unpopular proposal, and it was a big part of why they lost the election.

Yep. The Hutt Valley hasn't been too bad, but I really feel for people in Wellington City.

Is anyone else thoroughly sick of politicians constantly calling for resignations every time a mistake is made?

It sounds like the school lunch thing is a royal cockup, and I'm not defending it, but calling for a resignation over this is a bit silly.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of this trial is, as someone who drives as part of my job, I have a very dim view of people who disrupt transport to make a political point.

I also think their cause just isn't particularly feasible.

Real life Harley Quinn right there.

Luxon is not a natural politician, is he?

I don't think we've ever had such a sharp change in public opinion as we've had over the last decade or so, certainly not in the MMP era.

Labour went from an outright majority to barely 25% of the vote in one term, and now we're set to have our very first single term government in a very long time.

It's enough to give you whiplash.

Some quite out of touch comments in here, I think. Saying "unlikely they would imitate the stylish apartment blocks that can be seen in the likes of Paris or Rome." when a large chunk of our population currently don't have a hope of ever owning a home is pretty elitist, in my view.

They also mention 50m2 as being considered the minimum for banks to lend to you, I live in a three bedroom house that's 100, a living space for one person can definitely be less than half that.

I really hope we can get more dwellings built that are affordable for a single person, that's something currently missing from our market, I feel.
