IDK they've been pretty on top of this. I remember earlier this year there was a story about them honking all night at there depot and they released a patch to fix it in a couple days. They are trying to get approval to drive to the airport so they're very sensitive to public opinion and the politicians in charge of approving that.

It can work if there's a safer legal alternative. Like theres a black market for moonshine but it's miniscule compared to the whole alcohol market because most people would rather go to a normal store and buy vodka instead cause they know what they're getting. Same with tobacco, they aren't banning all nicotine products, just smoking, so if the options are to smoke this probably contaminated tobacco you get off the black market or vape / chew nicotine products that have some quality assurance most people will choose the latter.
Wonder how the millennials are gonna handle being the rich generation in a decade when there boomer parents die off and they inherit overinflated property values combined with them being the only one with well paying jobs since they got in when there were at least a couple rungs on the bottom of the ladder.
Man the ai hate is so strong on lemmy they can't even admit when it's good at something. Though I'm guessing a lot of these people's experience with getting recipes from it is memes of bad hallucinations and not actually trying it looking at all the "glue on pizza" takes.

It keeps you on there site. Same reason Twitter banned links and has grok now, the longer you stay on the site the more likely you are to look at or even click on an ad on that site. If you google something, then quickly scroll past the first couple ad links and click on the first non ad link you are maybe only staying on Google for 1 or 2 seconds. If you get an "ai overview" at the top and start reading through that then you're maybe spending 10-30 seconds reading through that. That's another 10 seconds that the ad was displayed that Google can go to there ad customers and say people were looking at it longer.
Another reason more motivated by user experience is also that the AI has a better "understanding" of meaning compared to typical search algorithms. Say you search "Starbucks price at closing" when you meant "Starbucks stock price at time of market closing" an AI would be more able to discern that meaning as opposed to a traditional algorithm which may show you the closing time of the nearest Starbucks, or the price of one of there drinks etc.
