The paradox is the result of the liberalist idea of some universal right to tolerance; that there's some inherent moral or pragmatic obligation for us to just tolerate everyone and everything possible.

There's no moral nor pragmatic benefit to tolerating neo-nazis in a community. We don't need some mental gymanastical paradox to excuse that fact. Being a neo-nazi is a personal choice to be harmful antisocial scum, comparable to child abusers and billionaires, and the abstract liberalist idea that they automatically deserve freedom, liberty or tolerance in the first place is pointless and dangerous.

I recommend reading the quotes of the two military historians in the second half, if nothing else.

For me, I'm studying cyber women.

I don’t get where do they see the accomplishment in defining “woman” as “biological woman”

It just seems like a mental-gymnastic pseudo-intellectual way of just saying "female". It's a weird coping mechanism to try and handle the idea that a feminine gender (woman) doesn't have to match to a biological sex category (female). And yes, you're right, biology is complex and doesn't just have two neat sex categories.

Personally, I don't want the Coalition to keep the promises I've heard so far.

The parties obviously aren't the same, I haven't seen anyone say that here. In fact, I prefer one far more than the other and my preferences reflect that. But both are inadequate. The false dichotomy people keep implying, despite the consistent rise of minor parties and the crossbench, is bloody irritating. (I know your post is talking about parties that have held government and there are only two of those, I'm referring to the "both parties are the same" line)

Absolutely. I'll try and find the post, (update: found it) but IIRC the OP quietly vented their annoyance to their wife that, as a newer vet, they felt ignored by that town's service only mentioning the Boer War, WWI and WWII. Some grouch overheard them and tried to argue "this isn't about you!' then made posts on FB trying to shame them and get them banned. And look, I am critical about most wars Aussies have been in from 1900 to the present, but you're absolutely right that it's a stupid take, and I'll add that it's horrible and ridiculous too. Vietnam is especially complex because (among other things) there was still conscription ongoing, so it's unfortunate to see how many people broadly directed their frustrations at the soldiers (mostly fellow worker-class victims of the situation) rather than the people responsible for commanding our citizens.

Disagree as much as you want, but assuming you're a user, will you keep using it? This isn't a whoopsie, or unexpected. As you pointed out, it will happen again. And it was always the safe, profitable choice for them - they're a for-profit business beholden to VC money, not a political organisation or community project like Mastodon/Pleroma/etc.

It's far easier to make that decision before they gain critical mass like twitter and reddit did.

Agreed. It's an unfortunate situation, it really is, but there is a housing crisis and it's been [FAIAP] uninhabited for 18 years. Hope they manage to recover the furniture somehow, but ultimately, I care about housing people more than sentimental values.

As for the second one, I love what van den Lamb is doing but there absolutely needs to be critique and correction to avoid those slip-ups getting through vetting. Mess-ups can have serious impacts to innocent people and furthermore could further harm the public perception of squatting as a valid coping mechanism for combatting homelessness.

My naive guess is that if the Turkish government ban access to BlueSky for not complying, that cuts into user count and therefore profitability.

Honestly, did anyone outside politicians actually have an issue with this?

On reddit's military forum, there are stories there of some ANZAC day memorial services themselves were excluding modern veterans, claiming the day isn't about them. Regardless of one's own opinions on the armed forces, it's bizarre to see towns arbitrarily considering post-Vietnam ANZACs invalid.

[update: I just had a look around and they're not even talking about the Greens today]

So, my guess is, actual veterans probably have far more important complaints about the day than some ragebait headlines about some people actually doing fun things long after the ceremonies.

If a tenant isn’t home they will have the key with them, it won’t be in the box.

I was thinking about if a key was taken when it was there, then the attacker leaves to have a duplicate key cut, returns it (to prevent suspicion and the lock being replaced) and infiltrates with it whenever they want.

insurance

I don't know how that kind of property insurance works, but surely there are limits to what is covered? Plus, as another motive, it might just be out of spite, rather than to devalue property.

If you wanted to sabotage surely a molotov through the window would be more effective.

Yes, but there's surely a larger chance of needlessly getting on the federal shitlist for firebombing.

I suspect people mainly use the lockboxes only because other people do

I suspect it's a cheap and easy hack, I don't work with locks but I assume they don't need to 𝙿̝̃𝙰̤͙̑̇𝚈̲̠̤̪͒̉͐͑ ̲͇̳̺͈̽͌̇̓̄ ̟̝̹̞̩͔̼̀͂̓͑͒ͦ̓𝙼̞̹̩͎̣̥͇̟̒̊͂̽̇͗̓͌͊ͅ𝙾͚̲͎̰͔̖̼̐͑͒̀́ͩ̚𝙽͇͍̖̖̙ͮ̓̎ͤ̿𝙴̪̺̜̱̅̋̆̊𝚈̯̘̇̚ to install a whole new locking system on the door itself, just change the lock cylinder and put the new key in a cheap box.

Summary:

Today, Australia’s 39 universities endorsed a dangerous and politicised definition of antisemitism which threatens academic freedom, will have a chilling effect on legitimate criticism of Israel, and risks institutionalising anti-Palestinian racism. They did so without meaningful consultation with Palestinian groups or diverse Jewish groups who are critical of Israel.

The Jewish Council of Australia strongly opposes the antisemitism definition developed by the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and adopted by Universities Australia. By categorising Palestinian political expression as inherently antisemitic, it will be unworkable and unenforceable, and stifle critical political debate, which is at the heart of any democratic society.

The definition dangerously conflates Jewish identities with support for the state of Israel and the political ideology of Zionism.

I was going to include some key dot points, but this statement is succinct enough that you should just read it, or at least skim it.

I realise that all the screenshots of evidence make this article look longer than it is, so I've written some bullet points, but the whole article is worth reading (if you're willing to handle content mentioned in the warnings). Breaking federal laws, offering lawyers to neo-Nazis, getting into tiffs with said neo-Nazis when they turn out to be misogynist turds, it's a ride.

Bullet-points

  • Louise recently ran as a candidate in the Victorian council elections, contesting the Melaleuca ward in the City of Kingston, in Melbourne’s South-East. [and came in second place]

  • She also ran the 'Victoria Says No' Twitter account
  • And has a Telegram account very clearly linked to that Twitter account and herself (used photos of herself as the avatar), which, among other account names, included 'Batwaff3n' (a reference to the Waffen-SS, the military branch of the Nazi Schutzstaffel). She constantly posted anti-Indigenous and antisemitic content, including while at work and about work as a Liberal Party member.
  • One of this account’s contributions is the creation of racist & antisemitic wildlife-themed Telegram sticker packs. These Telegram stickers are all in breach of the Australian Federal government’s anti-swastika legislation.

  • [...] this account made over 22,000 comments in the Telegram chat of Brisbane-based neo-Nazi Daniel Seery-Walker. They also commented in other chats belonging to Young Liberal turned neo-Nazi Stefan Eracleous and Proud Boy Tim Wilms. In June 2024, this account abruptly stops posting – only for a new account called Batwoman to take its place. As Batwoman, they explain that they lost access to their old account. This Batwoman account has posted nearly 3000 comments in Daniel Walker’s chat since June.

  • In 2022, Louise made a chaotic appearance on the podcast of American neo-Nazi Jovi Val as ‘Batwaffen’ to discuss her involvement in organising anti-Andrews ‘Kill The Bill’ rallies using the Dan Andrews Must Go Facebook group. When some trolls joined the call and accused her of a romantic entanglement with fellow ex Young Liberal-turned-NSN “treasurer” Stefan Eracleous, she explained that she didn’t have time to discuss such matters because she was doing the podcast from her desk at work.

  • Louise made a number of references to working on material directly for Advance Australia, the conservative propaganda outfit – though at times her content was knocked back for being too edgy.

  • At one point she rants about volunteers not showing up for the No campaign: "I've got fucking Peter duttons chief of staff manning one of my booths tomorrow morning even cos I had a meltdown over all the volunteers pulling out" [...] "where are all these tough white men huh" [...] "they're too busy looking at themselves in the mirror at the gym no doubt". Later, "Shouldve gotten those Nazis out on my booths". These comments are referring to the NSN, those weirdos who keep getting on the telly.
  • After joining an NSN chat, offering to make banners and advising them legally on the symbols ban, Moira Deeming’s ill-fated Let Women Speak rally happened. Louise Black said the Nazi salute "wasn't the best pr move", leading NSN members to reply with aggressively misogynistic remarks, assert she had an intellectual disability and then claim they were protecting women. For over an hour.
  • [A few months later] we found Louise complaining about the NSN in a [Melbourne] Proud Boys chat

  • Still, Louise Black’s relationship with the organisation had sufficiently thawed by the time anti-fascist influencer Tom Tanuki had produced a video highlighting the National Socialist Network’s internal paedophile problems that she was willing to put NSN SA leader Cameron Brodie-Hall into contact with a KC specialising in defamation.

  • We find it telling that, while Louise Black has been shut out of a number of extremist groups—due to her habit of spitting the dummy when her unsolicited advice is ignored—the one organisation which hasn’t seen fit to show her the door is the Victorian Liberal Party.
