I think your second point is key. Once we're talking about billions or trillions of dollars the number doesn't really represent the same currency normal people use to pay their bills or buy food, it becomes a measure of power and political influence. Fines and taxes are scary because they serve as a reality check, they need to be paid in real money, where as things like net worth and stock valuation are in big part arbitrary and vibes-based.

Altman does seem like a guy who would turn his head away mid-conversation and talk to invisible entities.

After a bit of digging it looks like Newag has had a steady supply of government contracts:

25.01.2023 - 10,7 billion PLN (2,5bn EUR) for EMUs

24.07.2024 - Newag CEO mentions current contracts with PKP Intercity total 9bn PLN (2bn EUR)

21.11.2024 - 7,7bn PLN (1,8bn EUR) for hybrid MUs

23.06.2025 - most recent one I could find, 270 million PLN, EMUs for a local railway

Stock is up 260% since June 2022

In Poland we don't negotiate with corporate terrorists, we throw money at them. 🙃

The government will enact the will of the people, whether the people like it or not.

If I understand this correctly, according to UK government's logic, Discord's actions are comparable to a store selling alcohol to (potentially) thousands of minors who are wearing fake beards. What sort of punishment shall befall them for this misdeed, I wonder...

On one hand many countries will invest in heavy industry, manufacturing, and fall back to fossil fuels.

On the other hand, economy overall should slow down and consumption of non-essential goods and services will drop.

I'm not expecting any definite answers or numbers, of course, just some food for thought.

Maybe they're speaking Polish. "No to rasizm" translates to "Well, racism it is!"

But the reader does not steal, the clear logical conclusion is that piracy isn't theft if you read the book.

Thank you for the insight. Yeah, I expected the "cultural" talking points to be pretty similar across the western countries, including Poland, where I live.

The vast majority of pro-meat arguments I hear are based on these conservative ideas mixed with a large dose of protectionism, so any progress tends to be very slow.

But I think here we've passed the low point and common sense is slowly gaining ground.

This topic got ridiculously politicized, so hopefully once people get tired of the debate they will be more willing to consider the economic/health/environment/etc. aspects, not just cultural.

Tofu has been unfairly demonized here

Could you give me some more context on this? Is it the usual "phytoestrogen will make you a girl" or agricultural industry propaganda?

I feel like the EU in general has been quite pro-animal agriculture (for example plant-based milk can't be sold as "milk"), but how is it in Germany specifically?

Expected you to put noodles on her head. Disappointed.

Vice President JD Vance said Saturday that "we believe fundamentally that big tech does have too much power," despite the prominent positioning of tech CEOs at President Trump's inauguration last week.
